JUPITER, Fla. -- The Cardinals added late runs with heads-up baserunning to break a tie and defeat the Marlins, 5-3, on Thursday afternoon at Roger Dean Stadium.
St. Louis' Harrison Bader singled and stole second in the sixth inning against Miami pitcher Edinson Volquez, making his first appearance since returning from the World Baseball Classic. Patrick Wisdom brought in Bader with a single.
In the seventh, Jose Adolis Garcia singled, stole second and third, and scored on an error with Nick Martini batting. The stolen bags were Garcia's first of Spring Training.
It wasn't all smooth for Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright, but his outing was much better than his last. Coming off a start in which he allowed 10 earned runs, Wainwright gave up three (one earned) on five hits and one walk over four innings. He threw 71 pitches, 47 strikes, in his penultimate start of spring.
"More conviction behind each pitch and more purpose," Wainwright said of his start. "I was a lot more focused. I went into the game with my normal pregame routine and had a good mindset out there. Just much more quality stuff."
Run-scoring singles by Brandon Barnes and Dee Gordon off Wainwright in the second inning helped the Marlins to a 2-0 lead.
The Cardinals struck back with three runs off Marlins starter Dan Straily in the bottom half of the frame. Wainwright helped himself with an RBI single. Kolten Wong followed with a two-run triple.

"Just that one inning for Dan," Marlins manager Don Mattingly said. "It was kind of nice to see him bounce back after that. It was nice to see.
"Volquez got himself in and out of stuff. Getting him back out there is good, after the change in atmosphere [from the Classic] and everything else."
Those were the only runs surrendered by Straily, whose day ended after four innings. He allowed four hits, didn't issue a walk, and struck out three over the 74-pitch effort.
Marlins Up Next: The Marlins play their first night Grapefruit League game on Friday, taking on the Nationals at 7:05 ET on Gameday Audio. Jose Urena will make the start for Miami against former Marlins right-hander Jacob Turner. Adam Conley is among the listed relievers for the Marlins. Gordon, Adeiny Hechavarria, Justin Bour, Marcell Ozuna and Ichiro Suzuki are position players scheduled to start.
