Cardinals select Ronnie Williams in 2nd Round & Andrew Morales in Supplemental Round B during 2014 Draft

ST. LOUIS, Mo., June 5, 2014 - The St. Louis Cardinals had one Second Round pick and an additional Supplemental Round B pick as part of Major League Baseball's 2014 First Year Draft, wrapping up the night with a total of four selections. The team selected right-handed pitcher Ronnie Williams from American Senior High School in Hialeah, Fla., with the 68th overall pick and righthanded pitcher Andrew Morales out of the University of California Irvine at number 71.

Williams, at 6-0, 175-pounds, helped lead his American High School baseball team to its first state championship in school history by pitching his team into the title game. He went 8-2 during the season with a 0.97 ERA, pitching 65.0 innings in 11 games. He struck out 72 while walking 22 during the season.

Morales, a senior at UC-Irvine, is ranked 4th in the country with 17 starts and 128 strikeouts. He won his 10th game of the season against the UNLV rebels during Regionals of the NCAA baseball tournament. The 6-0, 195 pound Morales is 10-2 with a 1.64 ERA for Irvine and has held hitters to a .182 batting average. He is expected to start Saturday's Super Regional game as he and his teammates continue their season against Josh Holliday's Oklahoma State Cowboys in the Stillwater Super Regional beginning tomorrow at 8:30 pm. CDT. Morales is from Covina, Calif., and attended Rio Hondo Community College before finishing his collegiate career at UC-Irvine.

Earlier, the Cardinals selected right-handed pitchers Luke Weaver out of Florida State University with the 27th pick overall and Jack Flaherty out of Harvard-Westlake High School in Studio City, Calif., with the 34th overall selection in tonight's First Round. Major League Baseball's 2014 First Year Player Draft continues both Friday and Saturday when it will reach its conclusion after 40 rounds.
