ST. LOUIS -- Cardinals fans will get to see their Redbirds sporting blue in all road games once again.
The club announced Tuesday that it is going back to using navy blue caps as its primary road hat, beginning with this weekend’s rivalry series against the Cubs at Wrigley Field.
The change was spurred, in part, by a question posed earlier this season by MLB.com's Brenden Schaeffer.
“I think Brenden asked me about the blue hats when we did the press conference, and that led me to ask a few people,” said Cardinals president of business operations Anuk Karunaratne.
That led to a general questionnaire regarding the uniforms sent out to fans. Of the 15,000 responses, Karunaratne said 80% were in favor of the navy cap on the road.
“And so we decided, you know, we have [three] road trips left this year,” Karunaratne said. “Why not start now?”
The navy blue cap was a part of the Cardinals’ primary road uniform from 1992-2012. After that, the Cards then began wearing red caps on the road and broke out the navy blues for two specific occasions: Sunday home games, and road games against teams with red-dominant uniforms.
Now, St. Louis will be wearing navy blue caps on the road, no matter the opponent, for the rest of 2026.
“Our job is to make the best decisions for the organization, and as it relates to the things that our fans interact with, they're the main stakeholder we're trying to do all of these things for.” said Karunaratne. “Whether that's the in-game experience, or in this case, the uniforms, and so that should be an input into our decisions. In the end, we want to make sure fans and the voice of the fan is represented in the decisions we make, and it'll inform. It doesn't mean we're just going to run every decision, you know, based on polling, but in this case, that was a helpful input.”
