PITTSBURGH -- The Pirates have designated right-handed reliever Camilo Doval for assignment. The former All-Star and National League saves leader was acquired ahead of the Trade Deadline from the Yankees in exchange for prospects Omar Alfonzo and Luis Cruz.
Pittsburgh acquired Doval as a project piece, looking to restore his talents after a rough go in the Bronx. In 20 games (19 innings) with the Pirates, Doval posted a 3.79 ERA and walked 14 batters. Veteran Kirby Yates was activated from the 15-day injured list as Doval’s replacement on the active roster.
Pirates manager Don Kelly explained the squad wanted to keep bulk pitchers Khristian Curtis, Wilber Dotel and Antwone Kelly the rest of the way with two bullpen games remaining.
“He had some really good games and a couple tough ones,” Kelly said of Doval. “He's got some really good stuff, and ultimately, it really just came down to being able to maximize innings, and especially with some younger guys too that have pitched pretty well themselves.”
Doval was likely to be non-tendered this offseason.
