SAN DIEGO -- Buddy Baumann was the odd man out Sunday morning after the Padres promoted Edwin Jackson to start the series finale against the Giants, as Baumann was optioned back to Triple-A El Paso.
Baumann made his Major League debut during Saturday night's 7-6 win over San Francisco, throwing one pitch to get the Padres out of the fifth inning.
"Great pitch. It was a great pitch," said Padres manager Andy Green with a chuckle. "Evidently I should have let him make a few more pitches after the way that sixth inning played out.
"... I think in due time we see more of Buddy. I think that's kind of the message to him today."
While Baumann's debut was certainly uncommon, Leonel Campos came close to matching it for the Padres back in 2014 when he made his debut in Petco Park against the D-backs and used just two pitches to induce an inning-ending double play.
Baumann has posted a 1.06 ERA over 17 innings with El Paso, while holding lefties to a .080 average. Green thinks Baumann's unique delivery will allow him to have success vs. opposite-side batters at the big league level.
"He's navigated multiple innings at times, so he's pitched against righties to success," Green said. "I know he can get righties out. He's a unique look. ... He's already a guy of my stature so he's a little bit shorter and he's delivering the baseball really low to the ground and it's got like an upshoot to it that you just don't see that arm angle at all.
"You can't ever promise anybody anything in this game, but the expectation is before this year progresses too much further, he's going to get ample opportunity up here at the Major League level."
