Orioles add depth, sign trio to Minor League deals
BALTIMORE -- The Orioles on Wednesday added a trio of players to their organization from vastly different backgrounds, ages and skillsets, continuing to shore up regions of their Minor League operations.
The club signed 34-year-old left-hander Buddy Baumann, 24-year-old catcher Andres Angulo and soon-to-be 26-year-old right-hander Wes Robertson to Minor League contracts.
Transactions at the Minor League level are permitted despite the ongoing lockout and lack of a Collective Bargaining Agreement between the league and the MLB Players Association.
Baumann is the only one of the bunch with Major League experience, debuting with the Padres in 2016 and last appearing for the Mets in '18, with 19 earned runs across 30 2/3 big league innings (5.58 ERA) but a more impressive mark of 35 strikeouts against 18 walks. Baumann, no relation to O’s No. 10 prospect Mike Baumann, retired after spending the 2019 season pitching in the Independent Atlantic League and served as a pitching coach in the Angels’ system in ’21, so this signing represents his return to the mound.
In Angulo, the O’s add some catching depth to their system. The Cali, Colombia, native hasn’t found much success with the bat thus far but has thrown out 42 percent (120 of 169) of would-be base-stealers in his young career. He rose to the Giants’ Double-A level in 2021 and was assigned by the O’s to Double-A Bowie.
Robertson, who turns 26 on March 11, is a bit of a local product, having graduated from Washington College in Chestertown, Md., on the Eastern Shore. The undrafted righty was released by the Reds in November after struggling in 2021, primarily spent between Low-A and Double-A after some modest success in the early goes of his career.
The trio joins a slew of other notable Minor League deals the O’s have inked over the past several months. Chief among the group has been second baseman Shed Long Jr., a former touted prospect with the Mariners who has flashed some prodigious power in the Majors. Other players signed with prior big league experience include catchers Jacob Nottingham (Brewers, Mariners) and Anthony Bemboom (Rays, Angels).
