White Sox sign veteran righty Bryse Wilson to 1-year deal
The White Sox signed free-agent right-hander Bryse Wilson to a one-year, $1.05 million deal on Wednesday. In a corresponding move, the club traded catcher Chuckie Robinson to the Angels for cash.
Wilson, who is entering his age-27 season, elected free agency after being outrighted to the Minors by the Brewers in November. He is expected to compete for a spot in Chicago’s unsettled rotation, which just lost Garrett Crochet via a trade with the Red Sox. Only three of the six pitchers who made at least nine starts for the White Sox in 2024 are still with the team: Jonathan Cannon (21 starts), Davis Martin (10 starts) and Drew Thorpe (nine starts).
Wilson has appeared in 143 games (52 starts) over parts of seven seasons in the Majors, pitching for the Braves, Pirates and Brewers in that time and recording a lifetime 4.61 ERA with 305 strikeouts over 413 2/3 innings. He made 34 appearances (nine starts) for Milwaukee in 2024, posting a 4.04 ERA with 82 strikeouts in 104 2/3 innings.
The righty is perhaps best remembered for his dominant postseason debut for the Braves against the Dodgers in Game 4 of the 2020 National League Championship Series, which saw him toss six innings of one-hit, one-run ball in an Atlanta win.
However, Wilson has been much more successful as a reliever (3.57 ERA over 91 games) than as a starter (5.37 ERA over 52 starts) in the regular season.
Robinson, who turned 30 on Saturday, hit .129 with five walks and 20 strikeouts in 26 games with the White Sox this season.
