Unusual suspects step up to close first half with a win

Marlins enter All-Star break in second place in the NL East and leading the NL Wild Card race

July 9th, 2023

MIAMI -- On Opening Day, the Marlins fielded a starting outfield of , Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Avisaíl García. Due to injuries, only De La Cruz played in Sunday afternoon’s first-half finale.

No matter.

, Dane Myers and De La Cruz went deep to support left-hander ’s 6 1/3 innings in a 7-3 victory over the Phillies at loanDepot park. Miami (53-39) enters the All-Star break second in the NL East with a firm grasp on the Wild Card after taking two of three from its division rival.

All three Marlins outfielders homered, marking the fifth time in franchise history, and the second time this year, it happened in the same game.

“I didn't even know who Dane Myers was, now he's hitting homers [to the] opposite field against a really good pitcher,” manager Skip Schumaker said. “Again, just a testament to our farm system and what they've been able to produce to help us when some really good players have gone down. Dane Myers, another great day today, a couple more hits. Playing a good center field, too. It's just really helped out with some of the injuries.”

De La Cruz began a two-out first-inning rally against right-hander Aaron Nola with a double to center before Sánchez tattooed a two-run blast off the facing of an electronic ribbon ad in center. Statcast projected it at 461 feet -- the longest homer by a left-handed batter at the ballpark since tracking began in 2015.

During Spring Training, some questioned whether the organization would even keep Sánchez on the roster without any Minor League options remaining. When García hit the IL with lower back stiffness on May 2 (retroactive to April 29), Sánchez was promoted from fourth outfielder to a starter -- though at first, Schumaker considered it might be a platoon situation.

Sánchez ranks third among Miami regulars in OPS (.798) behind All-Stars Luis Arraez and Jorge Soler and is tied with the injured Chisholm for fourth in homers (nine). De La Cruz added a solo shot in the third, becoming the third Marlin to reach double digits this season. His .754 OPS is fourth behind Sánchez. That duo is producing in the middle of the order for a contending club.

“Injuries create opportunity,” Schumaker said, “and are you ready for your opportunity when it comes? They were ready. Just a credit to their hard work and buy-in with the hitting guys. It's just a combination of a few things. Again, just proud of how they work and come in everyday ready to get better.

“They're excited to go into the cage and get better. They're excited to go with [outfield coach] Jon Jay to get better, and so when you have that and you're excited to come to the ballpark every day, that creates that fun culture. I know winning creates fun -- I get that -- but I think that started in Spring Training when we were getting our butt kicked [with a Grapefruit League-worst 7-16 record]. It didn't really matter. They were enjoying coming to the field.”

That energy has been passed on to newcomers like Myers, a selection in the Minor League portion of last December’s Rule 5 Draft. He raked at Double-A Pensacola and Triple-A Jacksonville before receiving his first MLB callup with center fielders Chisholm and Jonathan Davis sidelined.

All that 27-year-old Myers has done is belt his first homer during Sunday’s third inning and go 9-for-22 (.409) while playing a position he’d played just eight times professionally.

“As soon as I got called up, everybody's just been telling me to play my game,” said Myers, who watched his teammates play on TV earlier this year. “I got called up for a reason, so just trust in that and go there and do what I do.”

Luzardo, meanwhile, is beginning to actualize his potential.

Edmundo Sosa’s two-run homer -- the lone blemish on Luzardo’s line -- snapped his then-MLB-best 26 1/3 consecutive scoreless-innings streak. From June 18 through Sunday, Luzardo has a 1.14 ERA. He has pitched into the seventh in three of his five starts.

“Besides that, pretty happy with my outing and just more happy with how we're going into the break,” said Luzardo, who already has set career highs for starts and innings pitched. “I feel like this was a huge series for us after that Braves series last weekend, and it was a big win for us here to go into the break strong, and obviously winning against a contender in our division.”
