Bochy-led teams have made late surges before

July 28th, 2019

SAN DIEGO -- Giants manager Bruce Bochy has seen summer surges before.

In 2010, his Giants squad was 45-41 on July 9 and in fourth place in the National League West. The Giants then went 17-4 to move within a game of first place and ultimately captured the division title.

His 1999 Padres squad was 25-39 on June 17 and then reeled off a 14-game winning streak to get to .500. Unlike the 2010 Giants, those Padres didn’t use the hot streak as a launching pad and regressed to a 74-88 season.

This year’s Giants enjoyed an 18-4 run from June 30 through Friday. Will that stretch ultimately become the turning point to a successful season, or will it be an outlier for a team that finishes below .500?

Any moves before the Trade Deadline on Wednesday might help determine that. In the meantime, the evidence to answer that question comes from what’s happening on the field.

“This is over a longer period that we’ve been playing good ball,” Bochy said, taking an optimistic approach about the Giants’ sustainability. “Really, it’s been five or six weeks.”

Indeed, the Giants played .500 ball over 18 games just before they got really hot. Perhaps their 26-38 start to the season will be looked at as the outlier when all is said and done. The Giants boast a plus-40 run differential since June 11, during which time the roster has gained greater stability and the offense has benefited from the addition of Alex Dickerson’s bat and better lefty-righty balance that has allowed Bochy to make more lineup decisions based on matchups.

Bochy’s last game in San Diego

Before the weekend series began, Bochy speculated that the Sunday drive from his home in suburban Poway, Calif., to Petco Park would be a tough one as the memories of his time managing the Padres filled his thoughts. He found a workaround.

Instead of a night at home, Bochy and his wife, Kim, spent Saturday night at the Giants’ hotel in downtown San Diego.

“That’s the first time I’ve ever walked over from the Marriott, so it’s not like I went down memory lane on that one,” he said with a smile.

Bochy announced in Spring Training that his 13th season managing the Giants would be his last. He managed the Padres for 12 seasons from 1995-2006.

Jones to Double-A

Corner infielder Ryder Jones, who was designated for assignment last Sunday, cleared waivers and was assigned outright to Double-A Richmond. Jones, who had surgery to correct a left kneecap dislocation last year, has played at four levels in the Giants’ system this year, batting .189 in only 12 games. He played in 58 big league games with the Giants from 2017-18.

Rest day for Belt

First baseman Brandon Belt, hitless in his last 17 at-bats, got a rest Sunday leading into a team off-day on Monday. The Giants start a three-game series at Philadelphia on Tuesday.
