Here's the Crew's 2020 Spring Training slate
MILWAUKEE -- Attention Spring Training travelers: The Brewers’ exhibition slate is set.
The team unveiled a 34-game spring schedule on Monday that includes 32 games in sunny Arizona beginning on Feb. 22 and ending with two against the Royals at Miller Park on March 23-24 before the Brewers host the Cubs for Opening Day on March 26.
Milwaukee’s pitchers and catchers will report to camp on Feb. 12, and position players will report five days later. The first full-squad workout, open to the public, will be on Feb. 18, with the first game on Feb. 22 against the Rangers at Surprise Stadium. The Brewers will open their second spring at renovated American Family Fields of Phoenix the following day, Feb. 23, against the Padres.
In all, the Brewers will play 19 games at home (including the Miller Park exhibitions) and 15 on the road, including four split-squad dates. The Cubs’ only trip to the Brewers' spring home will be for the Cactus League finale on March 22.
Ticket information, including for the Miller Park games, will be released at a later date, as will the Brewers’ Spring Training broadcast schedule.
Cain ‘trending’ toward Tuesday
Lorenzo Cain missed a third straight start Monday after tweaking his left oblique on a check swing Friday in Washington, but he made clear that the decision was not his. Rather, it was the Brewers being cautious.
“I’m ready to go. I can play,” Cain said. “I’m good. They’re being careful. They are. All I’m saying is I can play.”
He added by ticking off the other ailments that have bothered him this season: “[Right] thumb’s great, [left] knee’s great, oblique’s great. And I’ve got three kids, and they’re great. Everything feels great.”
Cain’s nickname for Players’ Weekend, incidentally, is “THREE KID$.”
In a pinch-hit appearance during Monday's 3-0 loss to the Cardinals, Cain struck out swinging to lead off the sixth inning.
He was scheduled to increase his activity throughout the day Monday, and assuming that went well, manager Craig Counsell said, Cain was “trending” toward returning to the lineup on Tuesday night.
“I don’t want him to battle this,” Counsell said. “I want him to get past this.”
Last call
• The Brewers optioned right-hander Aaron Wilkerson to Triple-A San Antonio on Monday to clear a roster spot for Zach Davies' reinstatement from the 10-day injured list. It was a short stay for Wilkerson, who was an emergency callup on Sunday in the wake of Saturday's extra-innings marathon, and surrendered four home runs to the Nationals while pitching 4 1/3 bullpen-saving innings in a lopsided loss.
• Jhoulys Chacín is making progress in his comeback from a right lat injury. He is scheduled to throw another bullpen session, his third, on Wednesday in St. Louis. He’s no longer feeling any discomfort.
“I finally feel like I’m better,” Chacin said.
