Top prospects developing tight bond with Brewers
Outfielders Mitchell, Ruiz becoming fast friends
What better way to get to know a new teammate than sharing a hotel room? That’s how Brewers outfield prospects Garrett Mitchell (No. 5) and Esteury Ruiz (No. 8) got to know each other in early August, after Milwaukee acquired Ruiz from the Padres in the Josh Hader trade and sent him to Norfolk, Va., to join Mitchell and the Triple-A Nashville Sounds.
Now, they’re both in the big leagues. Mitchell made a splash after joining the Brewers on their last homestand, and Ruiz was promoted when rosters expanded for September.
“When I got traded over, he was the one who introduced me to our organization,” Ruiz said. “I admire him a lot. He’s a great player and also a great person.”
But is Mitchell a good roommate? Ruiz laughed and nodded yes.
“No mess,” he said in English.
Mitchell returned the compliment.

“He was good,” Mitchell said. “But let’s be honest, how clean can a room really be when we’re traveling and doing stuff? He was a great roommate. I would take him any time.”
It helps that Mitchell speaks a bit of Spanish and Ruiz continues to get more comfortable in English. What did Mitchell do to show Ruiz the organizational ropes?
“Nothing really crazy,” Mitchell said. “Just kind of telling him how we are as an organization, giving him the ins and outs, but also just showing him based on the type of person I am, how I like to do things. ... We were hanging out late at night and talking. It was cool.
“It was nice for me, being new to Triple-A at the time, and him just coming in [to the Brewers], I got to tell him about my experience so far in pro ball and got talk to him about his experience being in the big leagues with the Padres. He’s a great guy on the field and off the field.”
