MILWAUKEE -- The Brewers outrighted reliever Carlos Torres and outfielder Quintin Berry to Triple-A Colorado Springs on Wednesday, freeing two 40-man roster spots and likely ending Torres' two-year tenure in the club's bullpen.
Torres, who would have been arbitration-eligible had the Brewers opted to go that route, can refuse the assignment and become a free agent.
Originally signed two days before the Brewers' 2016 season opener, Torres had a 3.43 ERA in 139 appearances over the past two seasons. Torres was more effective in '16, when he posted a 1.15 WHIP in 72 games, than '17, when his WHIP grew to 1.53 in 67 games and he slipped down the depth chart.
Torres earned $2.175 million last season.
Berry appeared in seven games with the Brewers as a September callup, mostly serving as a pinch-runner.
