PHOENIX -- While one notable Brewers Minor Leaguer was on his way up this week, another was on the way out.
Clint Coulter, the Brewers' first-round Draft pick in 2012, was promoted to Double-A Biloxi on Friday from Class A Advanced, where he had been grinding through his least productive season since the Brewers drafted him 27th overall. Coulter was hitting .220/.285/.333 in 87 games before the promotion.
"He's a high-pedigree guy with a lot of talent, and just to get him up and there and give him a chance at the next level is a big deal," Brewers assistant GM Matt Arnold said. "Just get him a chance, challenge him a little bit and just see what he can do there at the next level.
"He's a big, strong kid, hits the ball hard and the organization has invested a lot of resources into him -- time, energy, Draft pick -- and we want to see what he can do."
Coulter moved from catcher to right field in the 2014 Arizona Fall League and manned the outfield ever since.
In another Minor League move, the Brewers released right-hander Ariel Peña, the final remaining piece from a July 2012 trade that sent Zack Greinke to the Angels. Another right-hander in the deal, Johnny Hellweg, stalled after Tommy John surgery and was released in November. Shortstop Jean Segura was traded to the D-backs in January for three players, including shortstop Isan Diaz, who ranks No. 10 on the Brewers' top prospect list.
The Brewers needed Pena's spot at Triple-A Colorado Springs for right-hander Ben Rowen, claimed off waivers this week from Toronto. He reported for duty on Saturday.
