MILWAUKEE -- The Brewers found their replacement for departed right fielder Avisaíl García and sent Jackie Bradley Jr. back home in the process.

In a late-night trade Wednesday, Milwaukee sent Bradley and two of MLB Pipeline’s top 30 Brewers prospects -- shortstop David Hamilton and infielder (and Milwaukee-area native) Alex Binelas -- to the Red Sox for outfielder Hunter Renfroe, who comes to Milwaukee with lots of power and two years of club control.

Renfroe, who has topped 30 home runs in each of the past two full seasons and set a career high with 96 RBIs in 2021, is eligible for arbitration this winter and then once more in the offseason of 2022-23 under baseball’s system as it existed at the time of the trade. He earned $3.1 million last season.

The deal offers the Brewers some payroll relief, since Bradley is due $9.5 million in 2022 and has a $12 million mutual option for ’23 with an $8 million buyout. He is coming off a miserable debut season in Milwaukee after signing as a free agent following eight years in Boston. Bradley was a Gold Glove Award finalist, but slashed .163/.236/.261 with 132 strikeouts in 428 plate appearances.

With that performance, it was difficult envisioning Bradley being the answer for the departure of García, who declined his half of a mutual option earlier this winter after hitting a career-high 29 home runs for the Brewers in 2021. On Wednesday, he finalized a four-year, $53 million contract with the Marlins.

In Hamilton and Binelas, the Red Sox are getting Milwaukee’s Nos. 16 and 17 prospects. Binelas was just drafted last summer out of the University of Louisville, a thrill for a player who was born and raised in the Milwaukee suburb of Oak Creek, Wis.

For the Brewers, that was the price of adding some power, which was a priority for a team that ranked 18th of 30 Major League teams in 2021 home runs, especially in the wake of García’s absence.

For the moment, the rest of the outfield consists of left fielder Christan Yelich, who has seen his power sapped in the past two years, and center fielder Lorenzo Cain, whose offensive game is more about getting on base and causing trouble on the basepaths. The Brewers' top outfield backup is Tyrone Taylor, who has manned all three outfield positions as his playing time has increased in the past two years.
