PHOENIX -- The most lauded Brewers prospect since Ryan Braun logged his first Major League hit in Friday's 3-2 loss to the D-backs, and it was something you don't see every day: a three-base single.
Orlando Arcia, in his third Major League game and eighth at-bat, lined a run-scoring single to right field off D-backs rookie Braden Shipley, forging a fourth-inning tie in a game the Brewers lost in 11 innings. When D-backs second baseman Jean Segura -- whose January trade from Milwaukee to Arizona was motivated in part by Arcia's impending arrival -- fielded the throw to the infield after Arcia's hit, he good-naturedly tossed it toward the Brewers' dugout for posterity.
"I'm very happy," Arcia said. "I finally got what I wanted, that first hit. You just have to thank God about it and move on, hopefully get more."
But wait. There was more to the moment.
Brewers second baseman Scooter Gennett fielded Segura's toss on a hop and pulled a time-honored trick, quickly pocketing the "real" ball and throwing an alternate into the stands to a fan. At the same time, Brewers manager Craig Counsell emerged from the dugout to suggest that Segura threw the ball away before timeout had been called.
The Jeff Kellogg-led umpiring crew conferred, and agreed. By rule, Arcia was awarded two extra bases.
"Everybody -- we noticed it right away," Counsell said. "The play wasn't over yet."
D-backs manager Chip Hale emerged from his own dugout to argue to no avail. Segura's thoughtful gesture earned him an error.
"I get it, but you have to wait," Counsell said.
The Brewers were unable to cash in on that break, however. After Shipley intentionally walked Martín Maldonado, he struck out Brewers pitcher Chase Anderson to end the inning.
It was just one of the notable happenings on a busy night for Arcia, who finished 1-for-5 with three hard-luck outs on balls scalded the opposite way. One of those was nearly the 22-year-old's first extra-base hit, but D-backs right fielder David Peralta made a terrific leaping catch to take away another hit from Arcia in the top of the ninth.
"I was hoping he didn't catch it, but he made a great play," Arcia said. "You can't do anything about it. He got to it."

Arcia also lined out to right field and to second base. His only soft contact came in the 11th inning, when he fouled out to first base.
"He swung the bat very well tonight. That was good to see," Counsell said.
Arcia also committed his first Major League error at the game's critical juncture. His bobble of a bouncer up the middle loaded the bases in the bottom of the 11th inning with one out for Welington Castillo, who coaxed a walk-off walk from Brewers reliever Blaine Boyer.
Arcia fumbled the ball trying to flip it to Gennett at second base. He should have taken the sure out at first base, Counsell said later.
"I mean, you have to make sure you get an out there," Arcia said. "It just kind of hit me on the top of my glove and it was hard to get out. I didn't really get it out there."
Arcia is No. 13 on MLBPipeline.com's list of the top prospects in baseball. The Brewers promoted him to the Majors on Tuesday in the wake of the non-waiver Trade Deadline, and plan to start him at shortstop for the remainder of the season.
