Rox ink Minors contract with catcher Nicholas
DENVER -- Catcher Brett Nicholas, who appeared in 36 games with the Rangers in 2016 and '17, agreed to terms on a Minor League contract with the Rockies on Sunday, the club said.
Nicholas, 30, hit a combined .252 with the Rangers. He spent last season with the Padres' Triple-A club in El Paso after arriving in an April trade from the Rangers. Nicholas batted .291 with a .353 on-base percentage and a .485 slugging percentage, 16 home runs and 83 RBIs for El Paso.
Nicholas' acquisition as a non-roster player means the Rockies currently have four catchers with Major League experience. There are three on the Major League roster: Chris Iannetta, headed into the final year of a two-year contract; Tony Wolters, the backup for much of the season; and Tom Murphy, who split the season between the Majors and Triple-A Albuquerque. Andrew Butera, acquired from the Royals in late August, became a free agent at season's end.
Nicholas has also appeared in 419 Minor League games at first base.
