Baty earns AFL Hitter of the Week honors
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Brett Baty is off to a scorching start in the Arizona Fall League and was named the league’s Week 1 Hitter of the Week for his efforts.
The No. 45 overall prospect hit an even .500 (7-for-14) and drove in two runs through his first four games in the desert. Baty has also drawn four walks, resulting in a .623 on-base percentage and a 1.417 OPS.
“It’s just awesome,” Baty said of being named the league’s top hitter through the first week. “I’m out here having fun with all these talented guys, just playing the game we love. It’s really awesome. The weather is great out here in Arizona. It’s really been a fun week so far and I can’t wait to continue it.”
Baty, the 12th overall pick from the 2019 Draft, slashed .292/.382/.855 over 91 games this year, reaching Double-A Binghamton and taking part in the Futures Game in his first full season.
The 21-year-old has long been an advanced hitter and his ability to spray the ball all over the field was his calling card as he entered the Draft out of the Texas high school ranks. So, it should come as little surprise that Baty has hit the ball well in pro ball, but he’s still hoping to improve offensively in Arizona, cutting down on some swing-and-miss while continuing to drive the ball.
“I’m really just trying to fine-tune some details,” Baty said. “Work at defense over at third base, pitch recognition at the plate and really hitting the ball hard have been some of the key points that I’ve been trying to focus on.”
If hitting the ball hard is the goal, Baty is succeeding early.
He hit a triple with a 110 mph exit velocity, the third-fastest tracked ball of the AFL season, on Saturday and has also registered singles with exit velocities of 106.5 and 108.7 mph, respectively. (Note: Statcast data is only available for games at Salt River Fields).
“I was just coming out here trying to have fun, really work on some things before the offseason,” Baty said. “The success I’ve had is really a tribute to all the hard work and all the guys around me really pushing me.”
