Division games have always been important because obviously they are a way to make up ground, but they’ve taken on more significance the past two seasons because if there are ties in the standings at the end of the season there no longer are one-game playoffs.
Instead, it would go to tiebreakers with the first one being head-to-head records.
The D-backs are battling the Giants, Padres Cubs, Brewers, Reds and Marlins currently in the Wild Card race.
Here are their records against each:
Brewers 4-2
Giants 5-6
Marlins 2-4
Padres 2-4
Reds 0-3
Cubs 0-0
The D-backs do not have any games left against the Brewers or Marlins, but they still have two remaining against the Giants, seven against the Padres and Cubs and four against the Reds.
“I feel like the players, we are locked in, we're in a good spot,” D-backs first baseman Christian Walker said. “We understand what this rest of the season needs to look like.”
While the games against their Wild Card foes are important, each game should have urgency now for the D-backs given their struggles over the last month.
“Every game we play is important,” D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said. “I respect your question, but every game we play from here on out is extremely important and I want it to feel like it's the most important game today. But yeah, given some of the added parts of the equation, we know that these are statement games against very good teams, and we've got to be at our best to beat these guys.”
