Here are the 8 clubs with new managers

November 21st, 2023

The Padres have hired Mike Shildt as their next manager, joining the Angels, Astros, Brewers, Cubs, Giants, Guardians and Mets among the teams that have new skippers.

Here's a breakdown of the eight clubs and their managerial decisions.

Angels
The Halos declined Phil Nevin's 2024 club option after they went 119-149 (.444) over parts of two seasons under his stewardship. In his place, they hired Ron Washington, who managed the Rangers from 2007-14 and led the team to back-to-back World Series appearances in 2010-11. Washington spent the past seven years as the Braves' third-base coach. More >

Astros
Dusty Baker retired following his fourth season with the Astros and his 26th as a big league manager. Under his watch, Houston won two pennants and the 2022 World Series. Houston stayed in house for its new manager, hiring Joe Espada, its bench coach from 2018-23. More >

Brewers
The Brewers needed a new manager after Craig Counsell, the winningest skipper in franchise history, made the shocking decision to jump to the rival Cubs after his contract expired. Milwaukee turned to a familiar face to fill the role, hiring bench coach Pat Murphy. More >

Cubs
Although they had David Ross (262-284 in four years as Chicago's manager) under contract for 2024, the Cubs jumped at the chance to hire Craig Counsell after the longtime Milwaukee manager's contract expired. Chicago announced Ross' dismissal and the hiring of Counsell on a five-year deal simultaneously. More >

Giants
With two games left in the 2023 campaign, the Giants opted to dismiss Gabe Kapler, their manager since 2020. Kapler won the NL Manager of the Year Award after San Francisco won a franchise-record 107 games and the NL West title in 2021, but the team was .500 or worse in each of Kapler's three other seasons at the helm. Bob Melvin was set to return as the Padres' manager for 2024, but after receiving permission from San Diego to interview the veteran skipper, the Giants hired him to fill their vacancy. More >

Guardians
After 11 seasons with Cleveland, during which he guided the team to a 921-757 record (.549), six postseason appearances and the 2016 AL pennant, Terry Francona stepped down as Guardians manager at the end of the 2023 campaign due to health issues. The club hired former big league catcher Stephen Vogt, who retired at the end of the 2022 campaign and spent this past season as a coach with the Mariners, to replace Francona. More >

Mets
Buck Showalter won the 2022 NL Manager of the Year Award after leading the Mets to a 101-61 record in his first year at the helm. But after a disappointing 2023 season in which New York finished 75-87 despite having baseball’s highest payroll, the team decided to go in a different direction under new president of baseball operations David Stearns. Carlos Mendoza, the Yankees' bench coach from 2020-23, will move across town to manage the Mets. More >

Padres
Although the Padres posted an 82-80 record and missed the postseason in 2023, general manager A.J. Preller announced at the end of the season that Bob Melvin would be returning as the team’s skipper. However, San Diego later granted the Giants permission to interview Melvin for their managerial opening, and San Francisco hired him for the job. The Padres chose Mike Shildt to replace Melvin. Shildt previously managed the Cardinals from 2018-21, leading St. Louis to a 252-199 record and earning 2019 NL Manager of the Year honors. He spent the past two seasons as a senior advisor with San Diego. More >
