Braves-Tigers game postponed; doubleheader Wednesday
DETROIT -- The Tigers will have to wait another day to try to build a winning streak. Heavy rain forced the postponement of Tuesday’s game against the Braves at Comerica Park. The game will be made up as part of a traditional doubleheader Wednesday afternoon beginning at 1:10 p.m. ET.
The rainout is the fifth so far this season at Comerica Park, leading to the fourth doubleheader. The previous one came against the Mets in early May. The Tigers, who also had a game postponed at Philadelphia last week due to air quality, also have a home game scheduled against the Giants on July 24 to make up for an April 16 postponement.
What was expected to be a round of hit-and-miss showers Tuesday afternoon into early evening became more of a downpour that began about an hour before scheduled first pitch of 6:40 p.m. ET. The storms flooded the Tigers' dugout and much of the warning track around the field, forcing a substantial cleanup once the rain finally let up.
The sun was out when first pitch was announced for 8:45 p.m. ET, but just as Tigers starter Reese Olson had started long-tossing in the outfield, the rains returned and forced the grounds crew to bring the tarp back on the field while pregame ceremonies were underway. Once the rain became another downpour, the decision was made to postpone.
Wednesday is a getaway day for both teams. The Tigers will head to Minnesota after the doubleheader for a four-game series at the Twins, while the Braves return home to host the Rockies.
Olson will start Wednesday’s first game, with his parents in attendance to watch the Georgia native face the team he followed growing up. It’ll be his third MLB appearance and his second start. Michael Lorenzen was originally scheduled to start Wednesday's finale, when it was set to be a single game, but he will get the nod for the second game of the doubleheader.
Tickets for Tuesday’s game can be exchanged for Wednesday’s doubleheader or any other Tigers home game in the next 12 months, excluding next season’s home opener.
