'Newk' to don custom cleats this weekend
ATLANTA -- Sean Newcomb didn't know what to expect when he asked a friend of a friend to create an Atlanta-themed design for his cleats. Thus, he was understandably thrilled to receive what might prove to be the coolest item any of the Braves will don as they spend the next few days enjoying Players Weekend.
The sides of the red, white and blue cleats are adorned by images of Hank Aaron, Phil Niekro, Chipper Jones, Andruw Jones, Bobby Cox, John Smoltz, Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine. Near the toes of the shoes rest images of the Atlanta skyline and SunTrust Park.
"It's pretty cool," Newcomb said. "I didn't expect them to be so loud, but I appreciate it. It's awesome. It's legit artwork on the cleats."

Newcomb will don the cleats for the first time when he starts Saturday night's game against the Rockies at SunTrust Park. All Major League players will be given a chance to express their personality while wearing colorful, non-traditional uniforms featuring alternate designs.
The jerseys will be adorned with nicknames, like "Newk," which will be displayed on Newcomb's jersey throughout the weekend.
"It's kind of cool throwing the 'K' in there," Newcomb said. "It's good that it's kind of our own thing."
