ATLANTA -- Over the course of the past week, Freddie Freeman has said that all streaks eventually come to an end. But, it's safe to say he was hoping his streak would have lasted at least a few more days to provide him some material to use during his trash-talking exchanges with good friend Dan Uggla.
Freeman's Major League-best 30-game hitting streak and 46-game on-base streak were both snapped during Thursday night's 5-2 win over the Phillies at Turner Field. The Braves' first baseman's 0-for-4 performance left him three games shy of matching Uggla's 33-game hit streak, which set an Atlanta record in 2011.
"It would have been nice," Freeman said. "He texted me [when he was at Wednesday's game]. It was a good little thing going on. Obviously, he's got the record for Atlanta, so, we'll let him have that."
Freeman will have plenty of more opportunities to better what was the big leagues' longest streak this year and make another run at Uggla. But when he walks away from this season, the streak will simply serve as one of the many fond memories he has created while batting .345 with 23 homers and a 1.111 OPS over 92 games dating back to June 15.
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Freeman is one of nine players in Major League history to record a 30-game hitting streak within a 30-homer season. The others are Rogers Hornsby (1922), Joe DiMaggio (1941), Nomar Garciaparra (1997), Vladimir Guerrero (1999), Albert Pujols (2003), Chase Utley (2006), Ryan Zimmerman (2009) and Uggla (2011).
"I've been going pretty well for about three months now," Freeman said. "It's been a pretty good ride. Hopefully, this was just a little hiccup and I can finish up strong over the next three games."
Freeman struck out against Jeremy Hellickson in his first plate appearance and was strolling toward the plate in the fourth inning, when Hellickson exited with a sprained right knee. He flew out to center field on the first pitch Colton Murray threw and then grounded out against Murray's 0-2 fastball in the sixth inning.
When Freeman struck out against Jeanmar Gómez with the game tied in the eighth inning, there was reason to wonder if he might extend this streak like he had on Sept. 3, when he recorded a 10th-inning single during a win in Philadelphia. But thoughts of getting another plate appearance quickly faded as Matt Kemp followed with the go-ahead RBI double and the Braves added three more runs before going to the ninth.

Freeman batted .384/.485/.670 and tallied seven home runs during his hitting streak, which dated back to Aug. 24. His 46-game on-base streak matched Washington's Jayson Werth for the longest recorded this season. The only players in Atlanta history with a longer such streak were Gary Sheffield (52 games in 2002) and Dale Murphy (48 games in 1987).
"It was fun," Freeman said. "You ride it out as long as you can. But 30 games is pretty cool. I'll look back at it after the season, but for now, I'll just focus on tomorrow."
