SAN DIEGO -- Pitcher was forced to leave his start Saturday night in the D-backs' 7-5 victory in 10 innings against the Padres when he was hit in his left ankle by a line drive off the bat of Luis Arraez in the fifth inning.

Pfaadt had allowed just one run over 4 1/3 innings at Petco Park when, with a runner at second base, Arraez hit a 98 mph line drive that struck Pfaadt and caused a left ankle bruise. The ball caromed into foul territory toward the third-base dugout.

Ha-Seong Kim advanced to third and Arraez reached first on the play as third baseman Eugenio Suárez scrambled to retrieve the ball.

Pfaadt was clearly in pain. After he was examined by a team trainer, manager Torey Lovullo appeared to wave off any attempt by the right-hander to take any warm-up pitches and instead removed him from the game.

Kevin Ginkel replaced Pfaadt and proceeded to strike out Jurickson Profar and Jake Cronenworth to end the inning.

The D-backs can ill afford another injury to a starting pitcher. Veterans Jordan Montgomery, Eduardo Rodriguez and Merrill Kelly are already on the injured list, along with rookie Blake Walston.
