This hit only counts as 1 for Brandon Lowe

August 11th, 2021

Rays second baseman had a big night on Tuesday in Boston, finishing a triple shy of the cycle in Tampa Bay’s 8-4 win over the Red Sox. But Lowe’s single -- not his double or solo homer -- might have been his most impressive feat of the night.

Lowe put the finishing touches on the Rays’ comeback victory with what initially appeared to be a normal bloop RBI single to center field in the ninth inning. But a zoomed-in replay of Lowe’s swing revealed that he struck the ball not once, but twice, first near the handle and then closer to the barrel of his bat to give the ball some knuckling spin as it floated to shallow center.

Upon further inspection, a seemingly routine single put Lowe into the pantheon of players with double-struck base hits.
