Red-hot Witt flirts with cycle after tempers flare with HBP

KANSAS CITY – There’s no one swinging a hotter bat than right now, and the Royals’ star shortstop nearly added some history to it on Monday night.

Witt came just a single shy of the cycle in the Royals’ 10-4 series-opening win over the D-backs at Kauffman Stadium, helping Kansas City to its fourth consecutive win and matching last season's win total (56-45) in 101 games.

By the fourth inning, Witt had a triple, double and homer. His triple in the first inning was his 10th of the season, which is second in the Majors behind only the Red Sox's Jarren Duran (11). His 18th home run of the season was a three-run blast on the first pitch he saw from D-backs reliever Miguel Castro in the fourth inning, sending a middle-middle sinker 431 feet out to left-center field.

The crowd was on its feet as Witt stepped to the plate in the sixth inning, but that anticipation quickly turned into boos when Witt was hit on the upper left arm by D-backs reliever Humberto Castellanos with an 91.7 mph sinker. Royals catcher and team captain Salvador Perez was not happy about that, and had some choice words for the D-backs as Witt ran to first base.

Those words continued in the top of the seventh when Royals reliever John Schreiber hit D-backs catcher Gabriel Moreno. The umpiring crew issued warnings to both teams, and D-backs manager Torey Lovullo was ejected from the game, coming out to argue with the crew. Perez got involved, too, but manager Matt Quatraro, third-base coach Vance Wilson and bench coach Paul Hoover quickly stepped in.

Witt had his final chance at a single in the eighth inning against Castellanos again, but flied out to right field. He ended the game 3-for-4 and is now 12-for-15 in the four games following the All-Star break.

Witt was named the American League Player of the Week for the second time this season and, according to the Elias Sports Bureau, Witt is the first player to record three-plus hits in each of his first four games following the All-Star break.
