TORONTO -- Troy Tulowitzki is back on the disabled list for the second time this season and his latest stint could be a long one.
Tulowitzki was placed on the 10-day DL with a sprained right ankle prior to Saturday afternoon's game against the Angels. Prior to Sunday's series finale, the Blue Jays announced an MRI revealed ligament damage that will be evaluated further after he meets with a specialist.
Utility man Rob Refsnyder was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo to take Tulowitzki's spot on the roster. In an unrelated move, Toronto also activated right-hander Mike Bolsinger from the 10-day DL and optioned reliever Chris Smith to Buffalo.
"That would be my guess," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said when asked if Tulowitzki's absence would be lengthy.
Tulowitzki left the Blue Jays' 7-2 loss to the Angels on Friday night in the third inning after he sprained his right ankle while running to first base. His right foot made contact with the foot of Angels first baseman C.J. Cron, which caused Tulowitzki's ankle to roll as he touched down on the base.

The 32-year-old Tulowitzki also has been dealing with a groin injury for the last week. He sustained that injury on July 21 and initially had to miss two games. Tulowitzki returned to the lineup on Monday, but Gibbons admitted before the series opener vs. the Angels that the groin was still "nagging" his shortstop.
Refsnyder is expected to get a look at second base during Tulowitzki's absence. That would allow Ryan Goins and Darwin Barney to split time at shortstop, but Barney also is expected to see some time at second. Refsnyder has the ability to play third base and the corner outfield spots, but he's known more for his bat than his glove as he carries a .316/.365/.402 slash line in Triple-A.
"We want to see him play, how it shakes out I'm not sure completely yet," Gibbons said of Refsnyder.
