Blue Jays place Alford on DL, recall Smith
The injury bug continues to plague the Blue Jays.
The club placed outfielder Anthony Alford, who was called up on Friday for his first crack at the Major Leagues, on the 10-day disabled list Wednesday with a fractured hamate bone in his left wrist. Toronto recalled outfielder John Smith in a corresponding move.
Alford, 22, is the Blue Jays' No. 3-ranked prospect, according to MLBPipeline.com. He went 1-for-8 (.125) with a double and three strikeouts in his four-game stint with Toronto. The clock on his Major-League service time will continue to tick as he heals on the DL.
Smith has played two games for the Blue Jays in 2017, going 0-for-3 with a walk. The 24-year-old is batting .316 with four home runs and 21 RBIs for Triple-A Buffalo this season.
