Rainout means respite for Blue Jays' rotation
BALTIMORE -- The Blue Jays and Orioles are going to get quite familiar with one another down the stretch, with 13 more head-to-head matchups scheduled over the final seven weeks. Two of those games will now happen on the same day.
The Blue Jays had their series finale against the Orioles at Camden Yards postponed Wednesday night due to persistent thunderstorms in the Baltimore area. The game will be made up as part of a single-admission doubleheader on Sept. 5 at 1:05 p.m. ET. Game 2 will begin approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
The rainout gives the Blue Jays flexibility with their starting rotation, which is inching closer to full strength. They will simply push José Berríos back from Wednesday to Friday, lining the right-hander up for their series opener at Rogers Centre against the Guardians. Toronto has not announced any additional pitching plans, but the rainout effectively gives its entire rotation an extra day of rest. The Blue Jays already had Thursday off.
That should give interim manager John Schneider options over the weekend and into next week. The Blue Jays can push righty Mitch White back, find additional rest for Alek Manoah or even do both as they prepare for the return of righty Ross Stripling (right hip strain). Stripling is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment Friday with Triple-A Buffalo, and he may require only one start before returning to Toronto’s rotation.
However the pitching shakes out, the Blue Jays are delighted to be heading home. They went 3-5 during this challenging three-city road trip through St. Petersburg, Minneapolis and Baltimore, seeing their grip atop the American League Wild Card race shrink in the process. They left Baltimore on Wednesday night two games up on the Rays and the surprising Orioles, who moved into a tie for the third spot by virtue of Tampa Bay’s loss in Milwaukee earlier in the day.
“It feels like it's been a 15-day trip,” Schneider said Wednesday afternoon. “Three cities is tough, and it was against three teams that are fighting for a playoff spot. We’re looking to getting back home and starting a good homestand.”
And yet despite dropping both games in Baltimore this week, the Blue Jays are playing well. They’ve won 15 of 23, with 10 straight coming up against the Guardians, the Orioles and the Yankees -- three teams either vying for a postseason berth or heavily favored to clinch one. Thirteen of their final 53 games are against Baltimore, including three more next week in Toronto.
