Brewers trade Canha to Tigers for Minor League pitcher
The Brewers acquired Minor League right-hander Blake Holub in exchange for outfielder Mark Canha on Saturday afternoon.
Holub, who turned 25 in October, was a 15th-round pick by the Tigers in 2021 out of St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas. He split the 2023 season between High-A West Michigan and Double-A Erie, pitching to a combined 3.03 ERA with 76 strikeouts in 65 1/3 innings.
Canha, who will be 35 in February, was a 2023 Trade Deadline acquisition by Milwaukee, where he hit .287 with five home runs and 33 RBIs in 50 games down the stretch. The Brewers’ offensive output increased by almost a run per game with the addition of both Canha and Carlos Santana, and the club picked up 9 1/2 games in the NL Central following the Aug. 1 Deadline, closing out the regular season with a 92-70 record, nine games ahead of the second-place Cubs.
Canha ended the season with a combined .262/.355/.400 line across 139 games with the Mets and Brewers, hitting 11 home runs with 62 RBIs and 11 stolen bases. His two-year, $26 million contract originally signed with the Mets in November 2021 includes a $11.5 million option for the 2024 season.
