Here’s a subjective ranking of the top five for July 25.

1) Billy Wagner (1971)
Wagner has the most All-Star Game appearances (seven) of any player born on July 25. The first nine seasons of his 16-year career were spent in Houston before he made stops in Philadelphia, New York (Mets), Boston and Atlanta. He had a strong ending to his Major League career, pitching to a 1.43 ERA in 71 appearances, with 37 saves and 104 strikeouts in 69 1/3 innings in his All-Star season with the Braves.

2) Doug Drabek (1962)
Drabek is the only Cy Young Award winner with this birth date. In 1990 with the Pirates, he won an NL-best 22 games and posted a 2.76 ERA in 33 starts with 131 strikeouts, 56 walks and a 1.063 WHIP in 231 1/3 innings pitched to take home the hardware. He had a fifth-place finish in the NL Cy Young vote in his last year in Pittsburgh in ’92 and was selected to his first and only All-Star Game in ’94 with the Astros.

3) Javier Vazquez (1976)
Nobody born on this day has a higher bWAR than Vazquez (45.6). Over 14 seasons, he pitched to a 4.22 ERA with a 3.91 FIP, averaging eight strikeouts per nine innings. He made his only All-Star appearance in 2004 with the Yankees and had a strong ’09 season as a 32-year-old with the Braves, pitching to a 2.87 ERA in 32 starts that led to his fourth-place finish in the NL Cy Young vote.

4) Whitey Lockman (1926)
Lockman made his Major League debut as just an 18-year-old in 1945. He played in 32 games with the New York Giants, hitting .341 with an .890 OPS. Military service caused a quick pause in his progression, but he returned to the Giants full-time in ’48, batting .286 with an .815 OPS, 18 homers, 24 doubles and 10 triples. He was an All-Star in ’52 and finished out his 15-year career in Cincinnati in 1960.

5) Santiago Casilla (1980)
Casilla split his 15-year career between the two teams in the Bay Area, playing for Oakland for his first six seasons before going to San Francisco for the next seven years. He returned to the A’s for the 2017 and ’18 seasons to close out his Major League tenure with a 3.29 ERA, 144 saves and 583 strikeouts in 645 1/3 frames.

Guillermo Mota (1973)
Over his 14 years in the Majors, Mota played with seven teams, including the Expos, Dodgers, Marlins, Indians, Mets, Brewers and Giants. He ended his career following the 2012 season as a 38-year-old, boasting a 3.94 ERA (104 ERA+) with 696 strikeouts and 331 walks in 856 2/3 innings.

Ed Sprague (1967)
Sprague represented the Pirates at the 1999 All-Star Game in Boston and finished that season hitting .267 with an .817 OPS, 22 homers and 27 doubles with 81 RBIs. The majority of his career was spent with Toronto, playing the first 7 1/2 of his 11 big league seasons with the Blue Jays.
