February 1st, 2024

Who are the best players born on each day of the year? We have a list for every day on the calendar.

Here’s a subjective ranking of the top five for Feb. 1.

1) (1944)
Considered one of the premier defensive outfielders of his time, Blair earned eight Gold Gloves and two All-Star appearances over his 17-year career. He played his first 13 seasons with the Baltimore Orioles, helping them win World Series titles in 1966 and ‘70. Before retiring after the 1980 season, Blair picked up two more rings, with the Yankees in ‘77 and ‘78.

2) (1987)
A key prospect acquired by Detroit in the trade that sent Curtis Granderson to the Yankees, Jackson debuted for the Tigers in 2010 and finished second in Rookie of the Year voting. The speedy outfielder led the league in triples twice during his four-plus seasons in Detroit before filling mostly a platoon role for the Mariners, Cubs, White Sox, Guardians, Giants and Mets over his final five years.

3) Carl Reynolds (1903)
Reynolds tallied 699 RBIs over a 13-year career with the Chicago White Sox, Washington Senators, St. Louis Browns, Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs. His best season was 1930, when he hit 22 homers and drove in 104 runs while batting .359. In the second game of a July 3 doubleheader that season, he tied an AL/NL record by homering in three straight at-bats.

4) (1968)
The fifth overall pick in the 1986 MLB Draft out of high school, Mercker broke in as a reliever for the Braves in 1990 and helped Atlanta win NL pennants in ‘91 and ‘92. On Sept. 11, 1991, he pitched six innings and got the win in a combined no-hitter against the Padres. The lefty joined Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, John Smoltz and Steve Avery in a legendary rotation that led the Braves to a World Series title in ‘95.

5) (1992)
In his sixth season with the A’s in 2021, Manaea led the Majors with two shutouts and set career highs in starts (32), innings pitched (179 1/3) and strikeouts (194). On April 21, 2018, the lefty recorded the seventh no-hitter in Oakland A’s history against the Red Sox.

Others of note:

(1988)
Anderson threw a shutout in his 15th career start and finished sixth in Rookie of the Year voting in 2009. The lefty pitched 13 seasons with the A’s, Rockies, Dodgers, Cubs, Blue Jays and Brewers.

(1998)
Chisholm broke out for the Marlins in 2021, hitting 18 home runs with 23 stolen bases. The rising star was named the cover athlete for MLB The Show 23. Only injuries, which limited him to 157 games in 2022-23, have kept him from moving up higher on this list.
