The best baseball players born on Dec. 29
Who are the best players born on each day of the year? We have a list for every day on the calendar.
Here’s a subjective ranking of the top five for Dec. 29.
1) Devon White (1962)
White was a three-time All-Star and seven-time Gold Glove winner during his 17-year career. The Blue Jays outfielder made one of the greatest catches in postseason history in Game 3 of the 1992 World Series, robbing the Braves' David Justice of an extra-base hit at the center-field wall with a snag that drew comparisons to Willie Mays’ iconic play in the ‘54 Fall Classic. Toronto went on to win the first of two straight World Series titles. White won a third ring with the Marlins in '97.
2) Richie Sexson (1974)
Sexson hit 306 homers and drove in 943 runs during his 12-year big league career. He was a two-time All-Star, and his 45 home runs in 2001 tied the Brewers’ single-season record at the time. He surpassed 100 RBIs six times and hit at least 29 homers seven times. The slugger signed a four-year $50 million contract with the Mariners prior to the 2005 season.
3) Julio Rodríguez (2000)
Rodríguez was an All-Star and helped the Mariners to the postseason for the first time since 2001 during his impressive first season, which was capped when he was named the 2022 AL Rookie of the Year Award winner. In 2023, Rodríguez hit 32 homers with 103 RBIs and 37 stolen bases, while earning his second All-Star selection and second Silver Slugger Award.
4) Jack Wilson (1977)
Wilson had 1,294 hits and 426 RBIs over his 12-year career. The shortstop led the National League with 12 triples in 2004, earning an All-Star nod and Silver Slugger Award, but he was mainly known for his defense. After eight-plus seasons with the Pirates, Wilson finished his career with the Mariners and Braves.
5) Craig Grebeck (1964)
Grebeck went undrafted out of college but signed with the White Sox in 2006 and went on to have a 12-year career as a utility player with five teams, including the Marlins, Angels, Blue Jays and Red Sox.
Others of note:
Odúbel Herrera (1991)
Herrera was signed by the Rangers as a 16-year-old out of Venezuela in 2007 but never broke through with Texas. He was selected by the Phillies in the 2014 Rule 5 Draft and quickly found success in Philadelphia, hitting over .280 in each of his first three seasons and earning an All-Star selection in his sophomore campaign.
