Here’s a subjective ranking of the top five for April 30:
1) Phil Garner (1949)
Garner was a three-time All-Star who helped the Pirates win a world championship when he went 12-for-24 in the 1979 World Series. The infielder earned the nickname Scrap Iron during his 13-season big league career. Once his playing career ended, Garner managed the Brewers (1992-99), Tigers (2000-02) and Astros (2004-07). He guided to Houston to its first World Series appearance in 2005. But his most memorable moment as a skipper may have occurred on July 22, 1995, when a benches-clearing incident led to him tangling with White Sox manager Terry Bevington.
2) Charley Jones (1852)
Jones was one of the game’s first power hitters. Playing for the Boston Red Stockings on June 10, 1880, he became the first player to hit two home runs in an inning. He also held the career home run record (33) through the first nine seasons of Major League Baseball. He accomplished this despite having missed been suspended for two seasons because of a contract dispute.
3) Michael Kopech (1996)
Kopech and Yoán Moncada highlighted the package the Red Sox provided to acquire Chris Sale after the 2016 season. The reliver gained notice in the Minors with a fastball that was once clocked as high as 105 mph. Shortly after making his MLB debut for Chicago near the end of the 2018 season, he underwent Tommy John surgery which sidelined him throughout the 2019 season. He opted out of the 2020 season and then posted a 3.50 ERA while recording 103 strikeouts over 69 1/3 innings for the White Sox in 2021. Kopech made 25 starts and posted a 5–9 record in 2022.
4) José Peraza (1994)
Peraza was MLB Pipeline’s No. 38 prospect and the Braves’ top prospect when he was included in the multi-player, ill-fated trade that brought Hector Olivera to Atlanta near the end of the 2015 season. A few months later, he was sent to the Reds as part of the three-team deal that sent Todd Frazier to the White Sox. Peraza hit a career-high 14 homers and collected a NL-best 133 singles in 2018.
5) Jeff Reboulet (1964)
Reboulet served as a utility infielder over 12 seasons for the Twins, Orioles, Royals, Dodgers and Pirates. He was Albert Belle’s teammate both at LSU and again in Baltimore.
