ST. PETERSBURG -- Looking ahead to the final stretch of the Minor League season, the Orioles promoted a wave of prospects across their farm system on Monday. The headliners are top 2021 Draft picks Colton Cowser and Connor Norby, who will join No. 14 prospect Coby Mayo and 10 other ’21 picks at Low-A Delmarva, plus the promotion of No. 6 prospect Jordan Westburg to Double-A Bowie.

All told, 30 players received promotions to three level in a wide-scale restructuring executed with an eye toward 2022. The promotions come only a few days after top overall prospect Adley Rutschman debuted at Triple-A Norfolk.

From Double-A Bowie to Triple-A Norfolk: RHP Cody Sedlock, RHP Blaine Knight

The Orioles’ first-round pick in 2016, Sedlock went 5-3 with 4.60 ERA in his second turn at Double-A Bowie, with 67 strikeouts in 62 2/3 innings. Knight rebounded from a nightmare '19 season at High-A to pitch to a 5.04 ERA in 11 games (seven starts) this summer at Bowie, where he saw both his strikeout and walk rates increase.

From High-A Aberdeen to Double-A Bowie: RHP Tyler Burch, INF Andrew Daschnbach, RHP Morgan McSweeney, INF J.D. Mundy, RHP Garrett Stallings, INF Jordan Westburg

It’s the first promotion to Double-A for Burch, the righty acquired this year from the Phillies at the Trade Deadline for Freddy Galvis. Mundy has enjoyed a productive first season in pro ball, slashing .292/.389/.538 with 15 home runs in 71 games across two levels. Westburg becomes another three-level player in an Orioles system full of them this year, after recording a .306/.414/.500 slash line with 11 homers and 14 steals across 81 games at Delmarva and Aberdeen. He is on a 38-game on-base streak.

From Low-A Delmarva to High-A Aberdeen: INF TT Bowens, INF Jean Carmona, OF Cristopher Céspedes, RHP Noah Denoyer, RHP Griffin McLarty, INF Ryne Ogren, OF Lamar Sparks, RHP Adam Stauffer

Bowens and Denoyer are examples of players still in their first full season of pro ball due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Denoyer emerged as Delmarva’s most consistent starter in the second half, while Bowens and Céspedes paced the Shorebirds in home runs with 13 and 12, respectively. Céspedes also homered 12 times and drove in 51 runs in 70 games, while Sparks (.344 OBP) provided a spark near the top of Delmarva's lineup most nights. Carmona was part of the Jonathan Schoop deal in 2018; this is his first promotion to High-A.

From Florida Complex League to Low-A Delmarva: INF Collin Burns, OF Billy Cook, OF Colton Cowser, RHP Daniel Federman, RHP Conor Grady, INF Coby Mayo, INF Connor Norby, C Connor Pavalony, RHP Preston Price, OF John Rhodes, RHP Carlos Tavera, INF Jacob Teter, OF Reed Trimble, RHP Peter Van Loon, OF Donta’ Williams

The Orioles like to get their recent Draft picks’ feet wet in the Florida Complex League before sending them to affiliated ball: that’s what they did here with Cowser, Norby, Burns, Cook, Grady, Pavalony, Rhodes, Tavera, Trimble, Van Loon and Williams. At Delmarva, Cowser will play center alongside Trimble, Rhodes and Williams, while Norby will handle second and Burns should get time at shortstop. Cowser excelled in seven Complex League games, batting 11-for-22 with a homer and three stolen bases.

Maybe the most encouraging name in this bunch is Mayo, the Orioles’ fourth-round pick in 2020. Mayo had his pro career stalled due to a knee injury this spring, then homered four times in 25 games in the Complex League as a 19-year-old. He has huge power and a huge arm; this first run in affiliated ball will help to determine how well those tools translate to the pro game.
