These O's prospects were promoted this past week
BALTIMORE -- Not every Minor League player is like Jackson Holliday. In fact, most aren’t. The 19-year-old shortstop is a special talent, which is why the Orioles’ No. 1 prospect (who is also MLB Pipeline’s No. 2 overall prospect) was quickly moved up from Single-A Delmarva to High-A Aberdeen on April 24.
For many others, it takes a bit longer to earn a promotion. Typically, those begin to happen two or three months into a season. That’s been the case this year within Baltimore’s farm system, which has started to provide youngsters with greater tests as they continue their development.
Here’s a closer look at five O’s prospects who were promoted at the start of this past week and how each has fared thus far at his new Minor League affiliate.
INF César Prieto (Orioles’ No. 16 prospect)
Prieto was swinging a hot bat all season for Double-A Bowie (a .364/.406/.476 slash line with 12 doubles, one triple, four homers and 29 RBIs in 58 games), which earned him a promotion to Triple-A Norfolk. The 24-year-old, who signed with Baltimore out of Cuba in January 2022, has continued to rake during his first week with the Tides.
Through four games at Norfolk (entering Sunday), Prieto went 5-for-14 (.357) with a home run and four RBIs. His first Triple-A homer was a solo shot in the Tides’ 3-0 seven-inning win at Nashville on Thursday (the second game of a doubleheader).
RHP Justin Armbruester (Orioles’ No. 30 prospect)
After posting a 3.69 ERA in 14 games (10 starts) for Double-A Bowie last season, and then a 2.47 ERA over 12 starts in a return to the level this year, the 24-year-old has now graduated to Triple-A.
On Thursday, Armbruester impressed in his Norfolk debut. The 2021 12th-round Draft pick tossed five scoreless frames in a 3-0 seven-inning win at Nashville (the second game of a doubleheader), allowing only two hits and two walks while recording seven strikeouts -- tied for his season high, as he also fanned seven for Bowie on May 10 at Harrisburg.
OF Jud Fabian (Orioles’ No. 15 prospect)
After an eight-game stint at High-A Aberdeen last year, the 2021 second-round Draft pick returned to the level to open ‘23. In 56 games with the IronBirds this season, Fabian slashed .281/.392/.490 with 13 doubles, nine homers and 43 RBIs.
Over his first six games for Double-A Bowie this week, Fabian belted three home runs -- including one on both Friday and Saturday at Altoona. The 22-year-old went 6-for-27 (.222) with four RBIs and five runs scored.
RHP Jean Pinto
Pinto, who was acquired from the Angels in the José Iglesias trade in December 2020, pitched well over two stints at High-A. He recorded a 3.83 ERA in 24 games (19 starts) last season, then posted a 2.86 ERA over 12 starts in his return to the IronBirds this year.
In his Double-A debut on Tuesday, the 22-year-old tossed 4 1/3 innings of one-run ball in Bowie’s 4-1 win at Altoona. Pinto recorded four strikeouts while working around seven hits and three walks.
RHP Zack Showalter
Baltimore’s 11th-round pick in the 2022 MLB Draft, Showalter made only three starts in the Florida Complex League (posting a 0.90 ERA with 16 strikeouts in 10 innings, all this year) before getting moved up to Single-A Delmarva. On Saturday night, the 19-year-old made his Shorebirds debut, starting in the team’s 4-3 win over Augusta.
Showalter allowed one run over 3 2/3 innings in Delmarva’s victory, working around five hits and two walks while notching three strikeouts.
