PHILADELPHIA -- The Phillies on Friday checked one of two big boxes on their July 30 Trade Deadline to-do list.

They got a right-handed-hitting outfielder who can crush left-handed pitching, which they expect to see in the postseason. They traded right-hander Seranthony Domínguez and outfielder Cristian Pache to the Orioles on Friday afternoon for outfielder , who is expected to platoon in left field with Brandon Marsh.

The Phillies remain highly likely to acquire at least one late-inning veteran relief pitcher before Tuesday’s 6 p.m. ET Trade Deadline. Domínguez’s departure increases the possibility that the Phillies acquire at least two.

Hays, 29, slashed .255/.316/.395 with three home runs, 17 RBIs and a .711 OPS in 175 plate appearances this season in Baltimore. But in 72 plate appearances against lefties, he slashed .328/.394/.500 with one home run, seven RBIs and an .894 OPS. Hayes’ .894 OPS against lefties is 41st out of 212 players with 70 or more plate appearances this season against them.

Hays, however, has a .585 OPS against righties.

Hays, who cannot become a free agent until after the 2025 season, has a career .791 OPS against lefties, and a .727 OPS against righties.

Hays started in center field for the American League in the 2023 All-Star Game. FanGraphs and Statcast has different metrics on Hays’ defensive capabilities in left field. He has 13 Defensive Runs Saved in his career in left field, according to FanGraphs. He has -7 Outs Above Average, according to Statcast.

Domínguez, 29, signed with the Phillies for $60,000 as an amateur free agent in 2011. He enjoyed early success before suffering a right-elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery in 2020. He posted a 3.00 ERA in 54 appearances in 2022. He has a 1.13 ERA in 15 career postseason appearances.

But Domínguez had a 4.19 ERA and 4.59 FIP in 95 appearances the past two seasons. He had fallen on the Phillies’ bullpen depth chart behind Jeff Hoffman, Matt Strahm, José Alvarado, Orion Kerkering and possibly even Gregory Soto.

Pache, 25, had a .557 OPS in 118 plate appearances this year. If it was Hays or somebody else, Pache was expected to lose his job.
