Revisiting the A's 25-man roster projection

March 4th, 2019

The A’s depart for Tokyo in just 10 days, leaving not much time to make a handful of key roster decisions before they take on the Mariners in a pair of regular-season games across the Pacific.

At the start of Spring Training, MLB.com made predictions for the A's 25-man roster. Three weeks in, it’s a good time to revisit those selections:

Catcher (2): Chris Herrmann, Nick Hundley

What changed? The A’s added Hundley on a Minor League deal last month and now have a decision to make. They’ve said Herrmann will get an opportunity to get a lot of playing time behind the plate, leaving Hundley and Josh Phegley in competition for the final spot here. Of note: Hundley has an opt-out clause ahead of Opening Day that could force the club's hand.

First base (1): Matt Olson

What changed? Nothing. Oakland’s resident scoop master played in all 162 games last season and earned his first career Gold Glove Award.

Second base (1): Jurickson Profar

What changed? The A’s acquired the switch-hitting Profar in a trade with the Rangers, offsetting the loss of veteran Jed Lowrie. Early projections show he could match Lowrie’s offensive output, and Profar has impressed in the early going.

Third base (1): Matt Chapman

What changed? Chapman was slowed this spring while finishing rehab from left shoulder surgery, but he’s back in action at third base and readying to build upon his 24-homer, Platinum Glove Award-winning season.

Shortstop (1): Marcus Semien

What changed? Semien remains the guy, with No. 8 A's prospect Jorge Mateo waiting in the wings. Semien is the longest-tenured Athletic, preparing to enter his fifth season in green and gold.

Outfield (4): Mark Canha, Robbie Grossman, Ramon Laureano, Stephen Piscotty

What changed? The A’s signed Grossman to a Major League deal during the first week of camp and they expect him to see the bulk of playing time in left. Since then, Nick Martini has been shut down with a right knee sprain and will be the odd man out here.

Designated hitter (1): Khris Davis

What changed? Davis has yet to appear in a Cactus League game because of a left calf strain, but the A’s hope to see him in action by the end of the week and they expect him to be in the Opening Day lineup. No one in the Majors has more home runs over the past three seasons than Davis, who hit 133 over that span.

Utility (1): Chad Pinder

What changed? The A’s do-it-all man can back up any infield spot. Ditto the outfield. Franklin Barreto is following in Pinder’s footsteps as a super-utility man and he is enjoying a productive spring in his new role, but he’s set to begin the season with Triple-A Las Vegas.

Starting pitcher (5): Mike Fiers, Marco Estrada, Brett Anderson, Daniel Mengden, Frankie Montas

What changed? The A’s reunited with Anderson, who will slot into the middle of this group. Plenty of arms remain in contention for the fifth spot. Montas and Aaron Brooks could have a leg up on the competition because they’re out of options, but Paul Blackburn, Tanner Anderson, Chris Bassitt and No. 1 prospect Jesus Luzardo have also impressed.

Relief pitcher (8): Blake Treinen, Lou Trivino, Joakim Soria, Ryan Buchter, Fernando Rodney, Yusmeiro Petit, Jerry Blevins, Liam Hendriks

What changed? The A’s brought Blevins back on a Minor League deal and they likely want that second lefty in their bullpen. This would leave J.B. Wendelken out of the mix.
