A's to welcome Vucinich, Lieppman to HOF

Beloved behind-the-scenes figures to join Bando, Chavez, Rudi

OAKLAND -- The A’s Hall of Fame is filled with key figures who built legacies with their tremendous accomplishments on the field. But you can’t tell the full story of this franchise without also recognizing those who made major contributions behind the scenes.

That’s why the 2022 A’s Hall of Fame class, which was announced by the club on Sunday, features a couple of names who might not be familiar to the average fan, yet their impact has been felt by the club just as much as the rest of the members. Joining four-time All-Star Sal Bando, six-time Gold Glove Award-winner Eric Chavez and three-time All-Star Joe Rudi will be director of player development Keith Lieppman and clubhouse manager Steve Vucinich as the five members going into the A’s Hall of Fame next year.

A sixth member will join the group, voted in by a committee of A’s front office personnel, Hall of Famers, fans and media. Fan voting is open until Oct. 3 and votes can be cast at athletics.com/fans.

The ceremony will be held during a pregame presentation next season.

“I think it’s great that we are now putting guys into the Hall of Fame that don’t necessarily have to be in the National Baseball Hall of Fame,” A’s manager Bob Melvin said. “We’ve had so many great people in the organization that deserve to be in there. I’m glad they’re expanding that.”

Vucinich, affectionately known as "Vuc," has been there from the start. In an organization known for a large amount of roster turnover over the past decade, Vucinich has been a constant for 54 years. First joining as a ball boy in 1968, when the franchise moved to Oakland from Kansas City, he elevated his position to visiting clubhouse manager in ‘74 before assuming his current role as home clubhouse equipment manager in ‘94.

Lieppman grew up attending A’s games in Kansas City. After playing nine seasons of Minor League ball in the organization from 1971-79, he remained on as a Minor League manager from 1980-87 before serving as director of player development through 2019 before moving into an advisory role.

Chapman scratched from Monday’s lineup
Just a couple of hours prior to Monday’s two-game series opener with Seattle, Matt Chapman was scratched from the lineup with a left foot contusion. The club announced that Chapman underwent x-rays, which came back negative.

It’s unclear what led to Chapman’s injury, though he did foul a ball off his left foot area during an at-bat on Sunday that led to A’s head trainer Nick Paparesta checking on him, before Chapman remained in the game.
