Athletics Arizona Fall League updates
Athletics Arizona Fall League updates
October 25th, 2019
Seven A's prospects are playing for the Mesa Solar Sox in the 2019 Arizona Fall League: Shortstop Nick Allen (No. 6), outfielder Greg Deichmann (No. 17), first baseman Alfonso Rivas (No. 25), right-hander Brady Feigl (No. 28), right-hander Daniel Gossett, right-hander Jhenderson Hurtado, and right-hander Jesus Zambrano.
Here’s a day-by-day look at how Oakland's AFL contingent is faring:
Oct. 25:Mesa 3, Scottsdale 0 Greg Deichmann was ejected after his second strikeout of the game, in the fifth inning, but it couldn’t put a damper on his Fall League season, as he finished with the league lead in home runs (9) and slugging percentage (.658). Nick Allen went 0-for-2 as Mesa’s third baseman, closing fall with a .194 average in 18 games. Jhenderson Hurtado and Brady Feigl each recorded a scoreless inning for the Solar Sox. That’s nothing new for Hurtado, who pitched 11 scoreless innings across eight appearances with 12 strikeouts. Feigl was also stellar, posting a 1.86 ERA in eight outings.
Oct. 24:Salt River 0, Mesa 0 Greg Deichmann, who leads the AFL with nine home runs, didn’t go deep on Thursday, but he did turn in a 1-for-4 performance from the three-hole in Mesa’s lineup. After an underwhelming performance in Double-A (.675 OPS, 11 HR), the A’s No. 17 prospect has been a standout in the Fall League, batting .266 (1.017 OPS) with 12 extra-base hits and 20 RBIs in 21 games. Nick Allen started at third base for the Solar Sox and went 0-for-3 from the bottom of the lineup. The former third-round pick (2017) is batting just .200 through 17 games, but he’s stood out defensively at both middle-infield spots (and now the hot corner) in the Fall League.
Oct. 23:Mesa 2, Surprise 0 The left-handed-swinging duo of Greg Deichmann and Alfonso Rivas made up the heart of the Solar Sox’s order Wednesday. Both went 0-for-3 and reached base once via a walk. Deichmann continues to lead the Fall League with a 1.044 OPS, while Rivas saw his batting average dip to .306. Jesus Zambrano polished off the victory, working the final two innings for Mesa and earning his second save. Nary a batter reached base against the 23-year-old, who did receive some defensive assistance from a diving catch at third in the eighth and a running grab in center in the ninth. After having yielded runs in two of his previous three outings, Zambrano got back to form with his first multi-inning performance in nearly a month.
Oct. 22: Scheduled off day for all Arizona Fall League teams.
Oct. 21:Mesa 4, Surprise 0 Greg Deichmann’s incredible home run tear in the Fall League continued with a fourth-inning solo homer for Mesa on Monday. It marks back-to-back days with a dinger for Deichmann and pushes his AFL lead to nine -- five more than any other batter in Arizona. Only one other player has hit more home runs in an AFL season this decade: Mike Olt, 13, in 2011.
Another one!#Athletics’ Greg Deichmann has upped his @MLBazFallLeague-leading HR total to 9⃣ -- in just 20 games! -- with a 4th-inning blast. The next most is 4.
Only 1 player has hit more in an AFL season this decade: Mike Olt, 13, in 2011.
Alfonso Rivas hit an RBI double in the ninth inning to cap a 2-for-4 game, marking the fourth multihit affair in the first baseman’s past five games with the Solar Sox. Jhenderson Hurtado navigated around a hit batter to post a hitless ninth inning, pushing his scoreless appearance streak to seven.
Oct. 20:Mesa 8, Peoria 2 Greg Deichmann, who was in a bit of a funk and entered play hitless (0-for-10) in three straight games, got back on track with a solo homer in the seventh. Deichmann, a second-round pick from the 2017 Draft, hit a career-high 11 homers over 80 games during the regular season and now leads the AFL with eight through 19 games. Deichmann finished 1-for-4. Nick Allen put the finishing touches on Mesa’s offensive explosion with a two-run single in the ninth inning. The hit was the only time Allen, who finished 1-for-4, reached base. Brady Feigl gave up a pair of hits, but managed to get out of the inning unscathed, posting his second straight scoreless appearances. Feigl, who struck out two, has pitched to a 2.08 ERA in Arizona.
Oct. 19:Mesa 5, Peoria 1 Greg Diechmann continued to shine during the Fall League, albeit in a different fashion Saturday, drawing a pair of walks rather than slugging the ball. His second walk plated a run, giving him 18 RBIs, the second most of any player in Arizona. Oakland’s No. 17 prospect now has a .382 on-base percentage and 1.053 OPS through 18 games with Mesa. Nick Allen collected a pair of hits from the No. 9 spot in the batting order, coming around to score his first run in over two weeks. His sharp singles in both the fifth and seventh kept rallies going for the Solar Sox.
Oct. 18:Scottsdale 4, Mesa 0 Nick Allen went 0-for-2 with a walk from the bottom of Mesa’s lineup, dropping his average to .180. Jesus Zambrano gave up a two-out solo homer in the ninth to Logan Warmoth (Blue Jays) but otherwise pitched a clean frame. He’s pitched to a 4.00 ERA, but has now allowed runs in two of his past three outings.
Oct. 17: Scheduled day off for all Arizona Fall League teams.
Oct. 16:Scottsdale 3, Mesa 0 Greg Deichmann, Alfonso Rivas and Nick Allen all got the start for Mesa, yet combined to finish 0-for-9. The Solar Sox had just three hits, but Rivas was able to draw one of the three walks. Deichmann still owns a 1.069 OPS through 17 fall games, while Rivas, the club’s No. 25 prospect, is batting .310 and has six hits in his last four contests. Jhenderson Hurtado’s dominant AFL stretch continued as he struck out the first two batters that he faced, displaying wicked offspeed action. He got the third batter to pop out to end the frame and secure his ninth scoreless inning during the Fall League.
Oct. 15:Glendale 4, Mesa 3 Nick Allen hit his first AFL double and improved his average to .200 with a 1-for-4 performance from the bottom of Mesa’s lineup.
Oct. 14:Glendale 9, Mesa 5 Brady Feigl has thrown well in Arizona and that trend continued Monday as he fired a scoreless ninth. The Mississippi product retired the side in order, striking out two in the process, and lowered his ERA to 2.35 through six appearances. Greg Deichmann went 0-for-4, but is still have a strong campaign, batting .310 through 16 games.
