OAKLAND -- The A's rounded out their Major League coaching staff for the 2018 season on Monday, bringing Al Pedrique aboard as first-base coach.
Pedrique fills a spot that had been reserved for Mike Aldrete, who has been moved to assistant hitting coach, with Marcus Jensen taking over as bullpen coach.
Pedrique spent the last five seasons managing in the Yankees farm system and is familiar with the three players Oakland acquired in July's Sonny Gray deal: outfielder Dustin Fowler, infielder Jorge Mateo and right-hander James Kaprielian. Most recently, he was at the helm for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, claiming a Triple-A championship in 2016 with a crop of players that included 2017 American League Rookie of the Year Aaron Judge.
Pedrique, 57, brings 13 years of Minor League managerial experience with him. He's embarking on his fifth season on a Major League coaching staff but first since 2011, when he culminated a three-year stint with the Astros, including two as bench coach. Pedrique also served as third-base coach and interim manager for the D-backs in 2004. He enjoyed parts of three seasons in the Majors with the Mets, Pirates and Tigers during his playing career, appearing in 174 games.
He joins an A's coaching staff under manager Bob Melvin that also includes bench coach Ryan Christenson, pitching coach Scott Emerson, hitting coach Darren Bush, third-base coach Matt Williams and quality control coach Mark Kotsay.
