Astros prospect Randy Cesar extended his Texas League record hitting streak to 41 games with a fourth-inning double for the Double-A Corpus Christi Hooks on Sunday. He added a home run in the sixth and finished 2-for-4, raising his league-leading average to .354, as the Hooks fell to Frisco, 9-4.
Longest hitting streaks in Minor League history
Cesar broke a nearly five-decade-old record on Thursday when he hit safely in his 38th consecutive game. It took him four at-bats to extend the streak to 39 games on Friday, when he tripled in the bottom of the eighth, and he then ran his streak to an even 40 on Saturday when he beat out an infield single in his first at-bat against Frisco.

The 23-year-old third baseman topped Bobby Trevino's 37-game hitting streak in 1969 for the El Paso Sun Kings. When Cesar doubled to run his streak to 38, he said, he knew he was entering the history books.
"Of course," Cesar said after his record-breaking hit. "I feel very proud."
"It's the longest [streak] I've seen in person," his hitting coach, Troy Snitker, said. "It's been really impressive over such a long period of time. A lot of things have happened. He's battled multiple injuries, gone down to the wire multiple times."
During the first 20 games of the streak, Cesar only went hitless into his fourth plate appearance one time, but in the second 20 games, he got his first hit of the game in his fourth plate appearance six times, and in another game, the 36th of the streak, he didn't collect his hit until his fifth plate appearance.
Cesar, who signed with the Astros out of the Dominican Republic in 2012, is hitting .382 (63-for-165) during the nearly two-month run that began on May 5. His previous career-long hitting streak was 11 games, in July 2015.

Even though he's set the Texas League record, there are still milestones in front of Cesar. The all-time Minor League record hitting streak is 69 games, set by Joe Wilhoit in 1919. Joe DiMaggio -- who of course has the Major League record hitting streak, 56 games for the Yankees in 1941 -- also has the second-longest Minor League streak ever, a 61-gamer in 1933.
If Cesar can get to the 50-game mark, he'd equal the streak that Indians top prospect Francisco Mejia put together for Class A Advanced Lynchburg two years ago, which is the longest Minor League hitting streak since 1954.
