Here's what the Phils need at the Trade Deadline

This Trade Deadline feels different than others in the Phillies’ recent past.

Maybe because there is a real feeling the Phillies can make the postseason, and maybe do something if they get there. They open the second half of the season on Friday night against the Cubs at 49-43 (.533), 8 1/2 games behind the Mets in the NL East and tied with the Cardinals for the third NL Wild Card. They have been winning the past few weeks without Bryce Harper and Jean Segura, which is saying something. One or both players could be back sometime next month. The Phillies have pitched well, both in the rotation and bullpen. They have played better defense.

But, like every team, they have holes.

A potentially big one popped up last weekend, when Zach Eflin felt soreness in his right knee during a simulated game in Miami. Eflin has a history of knee issues, so the fact that he continues to experience discomfort there, despite not pitching since June 25, is concerning. If Eflin misses significant time, the Phillies will want to find starting pitching help behind Zack Wheeler, Aaron Nola, Kyle Gibson and Ranger Suárez, unless they think Bailey Falter or Cristopher Sánchez can do the job.

The Phillies can use another bat in the lineup, especially while Harper and Segura are out. Center field is the most logical fit.

Every team can use more late-inning relievers, and the Phillies are no exception.

Something will happen before Aug. 2. It would be stunning if nothing does.

“Every year you look at what [president of operations] Dave [Dombrowski] does,” Kyle Schwarber said during Monday’s NL All-Star media availability in Los Angeles. “Dave likes to win. I know the ownership wants us to win. You see what they did this offseason. We’re putting ourselves in a position to make the playoffs and have a strong second-half push. Whatever the Trade Deadline brings, it brings. If we’re going to stick with the group that we have, we’re more than confident with that.

“I think everybody kind of overlooks the young guys and what they’ve been doing on our team. You see a lot of new faces coming up. You see [Bryson] Stott. You see [Matt] Vierling. You see D-Hall [Darick Hall]. You see Yairo Muñoz. These guys are coming up in big, key spots. You see the way the bullpen has been throwing the baseball in the last month and a half. It’s been lights out. Obviously, our starting rotation has been nails all year. If we add, I think that’s the cherry on top. But we’re still going to feel good with the group that we have.”
