Lowrie bruises lower leg after being hit by pitch

MINNEAPOLIS -- Shortstop Jed Lowrie departed in the seventh inning of Monday's 8-3 win over the Twins after taking a pitch to his lower right leg, and he's since been listed as day to day with a contusion.

It was the fourth plate appearance of the day for Lowrie, who was in tremendous pain after getting hit by the wayward pitch from Minnesota righty Samuel Deduno.

"I haven't seen a pitch like that," said Lowrie, who was replaced at first base by pinch-runner Nick Punto. "It was just a really bad pitch. It was at least five feet short, maybe more than that, and then about five feet inside and bounced up and hit me.

"I can't really describe it, but it was sore right away."

Lowrie said the pain had actually subsided after the game, but he's not exactly disappointed his team has an off-day Tuesday. Having the time to rest could make him available for Wednesday's game.

"It's gonna be a little black and blue," he said. "I can guarantee that."
