CINCINNATI -- The Reds' Trade Deadline acquisitions from Monday, reliever Archie Bradley and outfielder Brian Goodwin, flew to Cincinnati via private aircraft to reach the club a little more than an hour ahead of Tuesday’s 16-2 loss to the Cardinals.

“There was definitely a buzz in our clubhouse yesterday,” Reds manager David Bell said before the game. “A lot of our players knew both guys not only as players but as people, which is really nice. We're excited. It's not very often you add to your Major League team and don't lose anyone on your Major League team. So it was nice, even though I know we gave up some good young players to get both of these guys.”

On Tuesday, starter Sonny Gray lasted just two-thirds of an inning, yielding six runs on five hits and three walks. Lucas Sims relieved him to get the frame's final out and went 1 2/3 innings, giving up three runs on five hits. Bradley entered in the third and shut the Cards down over 1 2/3 frames, striking out two.

To make room on the 28-man roster for both players, the Reds optioned pitcher José De León and outfielder Mark Payton to their alternate training site in Mason, Ohio.

On Monday, Cincinnati sent outfield prospect Stuart Fairchild and utility player Josh VanMeter to Arizona for Bradley. Lefty pitching prospect Packy Naughton went to the Angels for Goodwin.

Bradley was Arizona’s closer, but Bell made clear that incumbent Reds closer Raisel Iglesias was not going to lose his role.

“I don't see anything changing with Iggy’s role,” Bell said. “This is truthfully how I see it. Like, we're winning a lot of games, other guys are going to get an opportunity to close games. Having Archie, who has done that, is going to come into play. He’ll get an opportunity to do it. Michael Lorenzen stepped in last year and got opportunities. He's pitching well.

“We need to get the lead and challenge our bullpen, because we're set up for it. We're set up to do really well with it. I'm not getting too caught up or concerned with particular roles. But with Iggy, nothing’s going to change for him.”

As for Goodwin, he will likely spend most of his time in left field. Aristides Aquino was just called up to get time in left, but his situation might change now that Goodwin is on the team. Goodwin replaced right fielder Nick Castellanos in the sixth inning on Tuesday and knocked a double for his first Cincinnati hit in the bottom of the frame.

“A good left-handed hitter,” Bell said of Goodwin. “Has really quality at-bats, a good solid outfielder. He just adds a lot. He's a very solid player, so he's going to be in the lineup a lot. Definitely initially going into it, he’s going to play against right-handed pitching for sure, which we face almost on a nightly basis. So he’s going to get a lot of playing time.”

Senzel begins working out
Reds center fielder Nick Senzel was cleared Tuesday to begin working out in Mason. On Monday night, Senzel hinted on Instagram that some news was coming.

“I will be back on the field soon, thank you to everyone for their well wishes and support,” Senzel wrote. “I got great news today, which is one step closer to returning to the field.”

Senzel was last on the field on Aug. 14, before he went on the injured list for undisclosed reasons. It could take around a week before he is activated.

“It's going to take some time for him to get back into playing shape,” Bell said. “We don't have a ton of time left when the season's over. I know he's anxious to get it back as quick as he can.”

Winker serves suspension
Reds designated hitter/left fielder Jesse Winker dropped his appeal and will serve his one-game suspension on Tuesday. Winker was disciplined by MLB on Monday for leaving the dugout and for “contributing to the incitement” when the benches cleared on Saturday in Game 2 of a doubleheader vs. the Cubs.

With the addition of Goodwin and Aquino on the roster, Winker is likely to be the DH most of the time during the final month of the season.
