Rendon exits with sore big toe after HBP
Martinez not concerned about third baseman's availability
SAN FRANCISCO -- Nationals third baseman Anthony Rendon left in the sixth inning of Wednesday afternoon’s 4-1 victory over the Giants at Oracle Park for precautionary reasons after getting hit by a pitch in the right foot during the fourth inning.
On a 2-2 pitch, Rendon was struck by an errant slider from San Francisco left-hander Andrew Suárez. Rendon was slow to get up at first, but he eventually hobbled down the first-base line, and he continued to play his position for an inning. After his toe began to feel sore, Rendon was replaced at the start of the bottom of the sixth.
Asdrúbal Cabrera moved from second base to third, and Brian Dozier entered the game at second.
“It’s really nothing,” manager Dave Martinez said. “He got hit in the big toe, and he just got really sore. So for precautionary reasons, we got him [out], got him iced up and he said he feels OK.”
Rendon, who will be a free agent this winter, has been the Nats' most productive position player this season, and they cannot afford to be without him for any extended period of time. Including his 0-for-3 start on Wednesday, Rendon owns a slash line of .314/.400/.598 with 24 home runs.
Earlier this season, Rendon spent time on the injured list with a bruised left elbow, which resulted from being hit with an errant pitch. That injury lingered and caused Rendon to miss two weeks.
Rendon has started 80 straight games since coming back from the IL on May 7, and Martinez did not seem concerned about the third baseman's availability going forward.
