ANAHEIM -- It was a difficult year for the Angels, but there were still several notable wins and strong individual performances during the season.

Here’s a look at their Top 5 wins of the year and what it tells us about the upcoming 2020 season.

1. Angels make history on night for Skaggs
July 12 vs. Mariners

It was the most memorable game of the season, as Félix Peña and Taylor Cole combined to throw a no-hitter against the Mariners in the first home game since Tyler Skaggs’ sudden death on July 1. All Angels players wore No. 45 jerseys in honor of Skaggs, and it was a complete team effort with Mike Trout and Justin Upton both homering and rookie Matt Thaiss making a great defensive play at third base.

What does it tell us about 2020?

Peña showed plenty of promise before suffering a torn right ACL on Aug. 3, and this was him at his best, using his breaking ball to confound Mariners hitters for seven no-hit innings. He figures to be in the mix again in 2020 and can point to that outing to show what he can do when his pitches are working. Cole also showed potential in his rookie season before fading late in the year and will compete for a spot in the bullpen with his plus changeup. The Angels will also need to count on Trout and Upton for offense in '20, while Thaiss showed he can make tough plays at third base after seeing his first action there in ’19.

2. Heaney dominates in Texas
Aug. 20 vs. Rangers

Andrew Heaney struck out 14 over eight strong innings, while Trout homered and tripled to carry the offense. It was Heaney’s best performance of the year, as he allowed just one run on four hits and no walks.

What does it tell us about 2020?

Heaney dealt with injuries again and posted a 4.91 ERA in 18 starts, but he did strike out 118 batters in 95 1/3 innings. This game showed what Heaney can do when he’s at his best, and he'll have new pitching coach Mickey Callaway to help him take to it to the next level as a veteran starter.

3. Halos' trifecta leads the way
June 8 vs. Mariners

Tommy La Stella, Trout and Shohei Ohtani hit back-to-back-to-back homers off Mariners rookie Yusei Kikuchi in the fourth inning to carry the offense. It was the only time all season that the Angels hit three consecutive homers in a game.

What does it tell us about 2020?

The Angels will again count on La Stella, Trout and Ohtani to provide some power to the lineup next year, especially after La Stella’s breakout year; he was named an AL All-Star for the first time. It was also another instance of the Angels beating up on Kikuchi, who joined the Mariners on a three-year deal worth $43 million but had an 11.32 ERA in five starts against the Halos.

4. Ohtani's historic cycle
June 13 vs. Rays

Ohtani made history, becoming the first Japanese player to hit for the cycle, while Albert Pujols also homered. Ohtani homered in the first, doubled in the third, tripled in the fifth and singled in the seventh.

What does it tell us about 2020?

Ohtani served only as DH after undergoing Tommy John surgery on his right elbow on Oct. 1, 2018, but had another solid year offensively, despite struggling with his power in the second half. But Ohtani showed he can do it all with his speed as well and will return to two-way status in 2020. Ohtani figures to serve as the Angels' DH three to four times a week and pitch once a week.

5. Anything you can do, Trout can do better
July 23 vs. Dodgers

Trout did it all, smacking a solo homer and also throwing out Max Muncy at home plate with a 98.6 mph throw from center field in the second inning. Kole Calhoun also homered, doubled twice and threw out Cody Bellinger at home.

What does it tell us about 2020?

Trout has worked hard to improve his throwing in recent years and it showed with five outfield assists in ’19. He’s a true five-tool player and it’s a reason why he won his third AL MVP Award and is again the favorite to win it in 2020. The Angels swept the Freeway Series this season, winning all four games against the Dodgers, which makes the rivalry even more fun heading into next year. But the Angels will also miss Calhoun after deciding not to pick up his $14 million option.
