These Angels relievers will be worth watching this spring
TEMPE, Ariz. -- The Angels overhauled their bullpen this offseason, making multiple signings and trades to fortify a unit that produced a 4.88 ERA last year, tied for fifth-worst in the Majors.
They signed right-hander Robert Stephenson to a three-year pact, while also inking Matt Moore, Luis García, José Cisnero, Adam Cimber, Zach Plesac and Adam Kolarek (who was later outrighted off the 40-man) to one-year deals. That group joins a bullpen that already includes closer Carlos Estévez and top setup reliever José Soriano. The club is also expected to carry a long reliever with José Suarez, who is out of Minor League options, being the favorite for the role as he competes with Plesac.
Barring injuries, the Angels are likely to have an eight-man bullpen of Estévez, Stephenson, Soriano, Moore, García, Cisnero, Cimber and Suarez/Plesac. But things can happen, of course, and bullpens are always fluid throughout a season.
So, with Cactus League play opening on Saturday against the Dodgers at 12:10 p.m. PT at the sold-out Tempe Diablo Stadium, here’s a look at 10 relievers to watch.
40-man:
RHP Ben Joyce
The flamethrower is the club’s top relief prospect and showed some potential in his first taste of the Majors last season. His fastball averaged 100.9 mph, ranking in the 100th percentile of average fastball velocity in 2023, and he’s been developing a slider and sweeper to complement it.
RHP Guillermo Zuñiga
Like Joyce, Zuñiga has a big arm, and the Angels were happy to acquire him for cash considerations from the Cardinals after he was designated for assignment on Feb. 3. Zuñiga, who prefers to go by Guillo, saw his fastball average 98.9 mph in two innings of work with St. Louis last year. Zuñiga also features a slider and changeup.
RHP Kelvin Caceres
Caceres raced through the club's Minor League system in 2023, starting the year with High-A Tri-City, but ending the year in the Majors after striking out 85 batters across 54 2/3 innings in three Minor League levels. He threw only 1 1/3 innings with Los Angeles in September but is on the radar.
RHP Zach Plesac
Plesac signed a one-year deal after struggling with the Guardians in 2023 (7.59 ERA, 21 1/3 innings), but from 2019-22, he posted a 4.04 ERA in 445 1/3 innings. He’s stretched out to start but could be moved to relief. He also has Minor League options, so he can be sent to the Minors without being exposed to waivers.
LHP José Suarez
Suarez is coming off an injury-plagued year that saw him deal with a shoulder strain and post an 8.29 ERA in 33 2/3 innings. He’s had success in the past (3.86 ERA across 207 1/3 innings in 2021 and '22) and is out of options, so he’d be exposed to waivers if he doesn’t make the Opening Day roster. He’s stretched out to start but is the top candidate to be the club’s long reliever.
Non-roster:
LHP Adam Kolarek
Kolarek was the club’s first signing of the offseason, joining the Angels on a one-year, $900,000 deal in late November, but the seven-year veteran was outrighted off the 40-man in early January when they signed Plesac. Kolarak, 35, has a 4.68 ERA across 32 2/3 innings over the last three seasons with the A's, Dodgers and Mets.
LHP Drew Pomeranz
Pomeranz, who joined the club on a Minor League deal, has been an effective reliever when available but hasn’t pitched since 2021 after undergoing surgery to repair his flexor tendon. Pomeranz said he’s currently healthy and has been facing hitters without any issues. From 2020-21 with the Padres, Pomeranz had a 1.62 ERA in 44 1/3 innings.
RHP Hunter Strickland
Strickland was signed to a Minor League deal last week but didn’t pitch in the Majors in 2023, released by the Reds in May after struggling in Triple-A. The nine-year veteran has a career 3.41 ERA across eight seasons with eight teams, including a brief stint with the Angels in 2021.
RHP Carson Fulmer
Fulmer was a feel-good story for the Angels last year. The former first-rounder nearly retired but made his way back to the Majors, posting a 2.70 ERA in 10 innings late in the season. He'll be stretched out to start but gives the Angels some relief depth.
LHP Nick Jones
Jones, 25, is coming off a strong year that saw him have a 3.27 ERA with 77 strikeouts in 66 innings across three levels in 2023, including Triple-A Salt Lake. The Angels don’t have a ton of lefty relief depth, so he could find himself in the mix this season.
