Angels narrow GM candidates to 5 (source)
ANAHEIM -- The Angels are down to five finalists in their search for a new general manager. The candidates are Cubs senior vice president Jason McLeod, Mariners assistant general manager Justin Hollander, D-backs assistant GMs Jared Porter and Amiel Sawdaye, and Braves assistant GM Perry Minasian, a source has told MLB.com.
The Angels have a target of making a hire by Thanksgiving, but they could make a decision by the end of this week. The club has interviewed at least 14 people as part of their search.
McLeod has ties to Angels manager Joe Maddon, as the two worked together during Maddon’s five years with the Cubs, including winning the World Series in 2016. He previously worked with the Red Sox and Padres, being part of Boston’s World Series titles in '04 and ‘07. He previously interviewed for GM positions with clubs such as the Giants and Twins.
Hollander is the only known candidate who previously worked with the Angels, as he spent nine years with the club under former GMs Tony Reagins and Jerry Dipoto. He followed Dipoto to Seattle when he took the Mariners GM job in 2015. Hollander currently assists Dipoto in all areas of Major League operations.
Porter also has experience with Maddon, as he was in the front office with the Cubs when they won the World Series in 2017. He was also in Boston's front office when they won World Series titles in '04, '07 and '13. He's been an assistant GM for Arizona for the last four seasons.
Sawdaye also spent 15 years with the Red Sox, working as director of amateur scouting, before spending the last four years as an assistant GM for Arizona. He played a major role in the Red Sox drafting superstar Mookie Betts.
Minasian was hired by the Braves in 2017 after spending nine years with the Blue Jays and comes from a scouting background. He was Toronto's director of professional scouting for six seasons before becoming an assistant GM with the Blue Jays and later the Braves.
