Shohei Ohtani and Adley Rutschman. The game's uniquely talented two-way superstar against one of the brightest young stars in the Majors. You can stream this highly anticipated matchup for free on MLB.TV.
The matchup between Ohtani's Angels and Rutschman's Orioles is MLB.TV's Free Game of the Day on Wednesday at 6:35 p.m. ET.
Ohtani is once again doing what Ohtani does best: casually providing immense value as both a hitter and pitcher. In the series opener on Monday, Ohtani hit a 456-foot home run, finished a double short of the cycle and provided seven innings of five-run ball en route to a win on the mound. With a 147 wRC+ at the plate and a 140 ERA+ on the mound, Ohtani has been one of the most impactful players in the Majors.
Supplementing Ohtani's contributions have been Mike Trout (133 wRC+) and a supporting cast of names such as Patrick Sandoval and Hunter Renfroe. Thanks to a top-10 offense by both runs scored (221) and wRC+ (108) and roughly an average pitching staff, the Angels are off to a fairly competitive 22-21 start.
On the other side are Rutschman and an Orioles team that is proving that their 83-win season in 2022 was no fluke. Off to a 27-15 start, the O's hold possession of the top AL Wild Card spot and have one of the best records in the Majors. Rutschman has played a vital role in Baltimore's trajectory over the past calendar year. Since debuting in May '22, Rutschman is hitting .262/.374/.444, providing extraordinary defensive value and ranks as a top-10 position player with 6.6 Wins Above Replacement.
Rutschman is just one of many O's leading this surge to one of the best records in baseball. Cedric Mullins and Jorge Mateo have been well-above-average players at their respective positions. Their bullpen has once again been one of the best units in the Majors; Yennier Cano, Félix Bautista and Bryan Baker have arguably been the best trio of relievers of any bullpen so far in 2023.
Griffin Canning and Kyle Bradish, Wednesday's starting pitchers, will try to right the ship for two starting rotations who are both in the bottom 10 in ERA. For both teams to get back to the playoffs this year, they'll likely need to see some big improvement from their starting pitchers.
