Angels general manager Billy Eppler on Monday released an update on injured pitchers Andrew Heaney and Alex Meyer.
Meyer will be out of action for about a year with a labral tear in his right shoulder. He's scheduled to undergo surgery performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache on Tuesday afternoon.
Meyer has been on the disabled list since July 24 with right shoulder inflammation. He progressed to playing catch in August, but was shut down when his shoulder flared up again. Prior to his injury, he posted a 3.74 ERA in 13 starts (67 1/3 innings) for the Angels.
The news was more positive for Heaney, who underwent an MRI on his left shoulder Monday morning. His symptoms are consistent with an internal impingement, the statement said. He's unlikely to make his next start, but is considered day to day.
Heaney exited his start Saturday in the third inning with shoulder soreness. The left-hander missed most of 2016 and the first four-plus months of this season after undergoing Tommy John surgery. He's 1-2 with a 7.06 ERA through five starts in 2017.
